Any coin that is not premined / instamined, a coin that has innovation, and has been out for at least least a year.

Bitcoin
Litecoin
Peercoin
Mastercoin
Digitalcoin
Anoncoin (secure and stealth features)
Philosophers Stones (grows interest inside wallet)

The others are pretty much pump/dump/hype coins.

1. Cryptogenic Bullion because of the Proof of Stake and low supply. It takes 1000$/day to sustain its price which is why it has been steadily rising even throughout the recent BTC 'crash.' Plus CGB hasn't been recognized widely yet which means if, and when, it gets noticed the price will multiply many times over.

2. Bitcoin because it's most known

3. Dogecoin because the community is awesome

4. Quark because of the community and devs

5. Potcoin because I know how big marijuana culture is and so a crypto representing them could have huge potential

6. Would need to do more thorough research for more long term investments

Hold Long means few years. I think most will be out then, so I would apply a safe bet strategy with a diversified amount at risk.

I would put 80% in BTC and LTC (maybe also in peercoin). The remaining 20% would probably be divided in more than 4 coins, but for the sake of OP's question here are my choices:

3-Dogecoin
4-Worldcoin
5-Diamond
6-Digitalcoin

Bitcoin still has a lot of potential for growth, but there's little need to hold it directly, since all other cryptos are linked in price and will go up or down against the dollar, with it.
Honesty, I wouldn't hold any of the current crop of cryptos long. Some are innovative and are attractive to miners, but none really have anything more to offer regular consumers and to differentiate themselves from the rest. The only one to hold some real promise of going big is Dogecoin, and that's really on hype and publicity alone (but hype and publicity may really be all it takes). Obviously it won't go as big as BTC due to the supply and the fact that it's inflationary. There's also a lot of people holding a lot of Doge who are ready to sell the moment the price creeps up, which is really holding the price down.
At the moment, there's a lot of good money to be made by keeping your finger on the pulse and riding the waves of various altcoins up and down. There are lots of peaks and troughs, and more money to be made buying low and selling high, then rebuying when the price drops again.
Personally, I think that the open source model will be a problem for cryptos, as any innovation can be immediately cloned, effectively increasing supply. How can even an innovative coin truly take off and grow when it can spawn 1000 alt-coins the next day? I have a feeling that the next real Bitcoin successor will be truly innovative, and not be open source.

Why not create a poll when asking this?

There would be no point in creating a pull

Like many others has said
Quark
Vertcoin
Bitcoin

Can't really think of any other ones really end up being useful. There are some new coins coming out that are promising so list can change.

Why quark? except for the fact that u are using it as your sig. Isn't quark premined to shit?

it was never pre-mined. It was flash mined pretty bad though.
also ever since all the noobs showed up a couple months ago the price has been a joke out of pure hype and speculation.
Look at the graph at cryptsy.. that says it all lol
We all knew you were all coming too so we jacked up prices to soak you noobs running in with this "take my cash now" attitude Wink
And now a month or two later your all pro's hahaha
I called it too.. i was telling all the old school guys just watch and wait and see how these pro's that have been doing this a couple weeks will be spouting off like experts..
and sure enough it's all panned out hard..
We were waiting for you guys with a fork and napkin tied on lol

Securecoin / SRC is better than quark because of what it says on the ANN topic write up.. It's a fixed version of Quark i think.

Long term i'd say Bitcoin that's it.. and even that questionable i think.
