  • Facebook is reportedly looking into creating its own cryptocurrency.
  • On Tuesday, Facebook’s head of Messenger, David Marcus, said he was looking into blockchain applications within the company.
  • The creation of a Facebook cryptocurrency might just be one of the avenues Marcus and his team are exploring.
Facebook is looking into creating its own cryptocurrency, according to a report by Cheddar.

Reportedly, unnamed sources familiar with the matter said Facebook was “very serious” about its consideration of building its own decentralized digital currency.
Cheddar’s report follows an announcement from Facebook’s head of Messenger, David Marcus, who said on Tuesday that he planned to leave his position to explore uses of the blockchain at Facebook.

At the time, Marcus didn’t mention any possible applications for the blockchain.

But cryptocurrency insiders are speculating that Facebook’s interest in blockchain technology might have something to do with payments. Additionally, one former Facebook employee told Business Insider that Facebook might be interested in creating a digital currency that could be used as a system of payments on the site.

It’s thought that if Facebook offered a cryptocurrency, it could create a seamless payment platform on the site that could be accessible even by people who are unbanked.

A Facebook spokesman told Business Insider that the company was “exploring many different applications.”

“Like many other companies Facebook is exploring ways to leverage the power of blockchain technology,” the company said in a statement, adding: “We don’t have anything further to share.”

Facebook plans to make its own 'Digital' currency. Although Facebook forbids cryptocurrency ads or digital currency circulating on its platform, it doesn't mean Facebook's completely anti with bitcoin or the like. Facebook has reportedly been preparing to make its own virtual currency though not yet known when Officially announced ?... What do you think of this behavior?...

"The nature of Bitcoin is such that once version 0.1 was released, the core design was set in stone for the rest of its lifetime." -- Satoshi

Put the source or you'll get banned. (Plagiarism)
It is a rumor that they are creating their own currency and not just because they hired a blockchain expert, a facebook coin will come. That's a possibility but no confirmation yet from FB itself, they can also use blockchain technology to their soclal media.

This have been brought up a lot in the past and I did not see any official source until this moment for this information . You said it yourself nothing officially announced therefor nothing really to be discussed here . And as mentioned in the post above mine hiring blockchain expert is not a sign of creating a coin, a lot of companies hiring blockchain specialist, blochchain is a technology on its own .

P.S : why not just close or delete  this thread and do the discussion in the thread you quoted from ! I do not see any point behind opening new thread .

Facebook has been abruptly reversed ban on crypto-ads, now you can advertise cryptocurrency on Facebook but not ICOs.
Now, Facebook reversed its ban and will let you advertise crypto on the social giant, but is the company setting the board for its own chess pieces? Although ICOs still get the boot.
https://ameinfo.com/technology/it/facebook-crypto-ad-ban-reversed/
Everything is just a rumor until it proven to be true, so we just waiting for a Facebook official announcement about it.
Although, a new crypto for Facebook isn't a bad thing as many companies have been developing their own coins as means of payment in the platform.

Put the source or you'll get banned. (Plagiarism)

I think you should add the source for such huge information.
I don't think Facebook will lunch its own cryptocurrency, they already have enough troubles with jurisdiction.
Don't forget that, lately, they banned all crypto related advertisements.

Where you find the source that facebook will make your own digital money, I agree if facebook creates digital money, with digital money made by facebook is a very sophisticated technology, many will support it.

there is a lot of different rumors around. they were even saying Facebook is buying Coinbase Cheesy

you should never pay attention to rumors, they are just guesswork and usually are published as a click-bait when the news sites run out of things to say.

- banning the ads had nothing to do with bitcoin. the reason was because of thousands of scams that has been happening in these ads most of which were ETH ICOs.
- creating a new 'crypto' currency by facebook again has nothing to do with bitcoin and it won't prove anything about whether they are for or against bitcoin. they would be creating an altcoin for their own benefit like the 1700+ coins that exist out there.

Weak hands have been complaining about missing out ever since bitcoin was $1 and never buy the dip.
Whales are those who keep buying the dip.

I believe facebook is trying to play international politic with cryptocurrencies and bitcoin in particular! The world's  leaders has not spoken good about cryptocurrencies because they could not tax or control it and facebook will not want to get into trouble with those countries.  To me that is the reason why they have to ban crypto's ads and having a plan to lunch they own coins or tokens.

If theres a rumor then high probability it would really be that way where they would create such coin. Basing on their aims i would also believe they would make use of erc20 platfom because of smartcontract which is really suited out for Facebook.I cant think of any platform would really be useful that would benefit of such new coin.
For now we would need to wait up for future updates either they would continue or not on making a new coin.

If they do create one, does anyone honestly think it's going to be tradeable with a floating value?

Do you think Mark Zuckerberg would email his two billion users saying 'sorry the value you entrusted to us has gone down by 90% this week. There's these assholes on Yobit who are fucking with us.'

It'll be a token pegged to user local currency. That's if it ever exists at all. And there's much more to blockchain usage than just money.

I guess that rumors of facebook to launch their own coins wouldn't be possible to happen. Social media will always focus on the public news feed and people's social life. Eventhough some advertisements paid a sponsorship funds, it doesn't mean the admin of facebook accept cryptocurrency as their mode of payment system. The banning of cryptocurrency ads was still a controversy for us and they won't impose that, because in facebook there's freedom to advertise and express anything that has a pupose for everybody who needs better information.

Wasn't the banning of cryptocurrency ads a good thing for the community, because there are many scam coins and weak ICO's being launched?

Deploying blockchain application into their operation, yes that is possible as they have been mumbling this for long which I believe necessitated their review of the ban on crypto related sites by adding some conditions which I believe contributed to the improvement seen in price in the past couple of days.

But having their own crypto currency is what I am not sure they have the strength for. Is it not the sane Facebook whose services are prohibited from certain countries, even companies have been able to restrict their internet from accessing, or Mark that can be summoned by the Senate any time they so wish, he had better focus on a form of loyalty program and focus on his AI development rather looking for problems willingly.
