I remember in my previous job where I worked in Marketing, I suggested to my boss if some tasks could be done remotely (because terrible traffic was causing most employees to be late for work or for outside meetings). He said something like “I know it can be done with today’s technology, but I don’t want to lose the interpersonal approach that being physically present provides.” How I wish this article was written then. It could have supported my argument. But oh well, I don’t work for him anymore. Smiley

The article suggests that learning about one another is a great way to cultivate empathy, even if you are physically separate and working virtually. Don’t be all “business”, but ask basic ice breaker questions to create friendly conversations as well. And try video conferencing so you can see each other’s facial cues. Having rules and guidelines will create a more organized structure for everyone. For instance, have twice monthly meetings and put together a set of collaborative technologies so no one feels left out.

I guess it will take some practice, but working remotely while building teamwork is still possible. I mean, we’re already used to keeping solid relationships with friends and family by constant texting and Facetiming. The same principle can apply to the workplace as well, right? Are you in favor of remote working or having a virtual office?

That's great! I'm interested to know though, what tools, apps or technologies do you use to stay productive and connected while telecommuting?

Remote work is now completely feasible in some industries. Most of my work as a software service is done remotely.
