They have done multiple articles as part of a special on bitcoin. Seems someone at NewScientist is very much into Bitcoin as they have published a lot lately on them.
The network tries to produce one block per 10 minutes. It does this by automatically adjusting how difficult it is to produce blocks.

Well you would hope a magazine called New Scientist would have its finger on the pulse. Nice to see some articles delving in on the actual benefits of the technology behind it.
