Oh, OK, I had seen those threads but didn't realize that those members were from the Philippines. What you're saying makes sense. If you were appointed a merit source, even if you wanted to do things right, chances are you would send merits to multi-accounters, who in turn would send merits to their alts.
We are actually trying to find a solution to the multi-account problem, and it's a band-aid solution, not until we have figured out the best way to verify if they are not cheaters. Here is the thread in local - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5566069.0

What’s happening on your local board is probably similar to what is happening in some of the other local boards of developing countries. It’s no surprise that people try to cheat when they can make a better living with 2–3 accounts than they could from doing an average job in those countries and I don't see how that can be stopped. You can of course make their alt account farming harder by not sharing anyone from your local board merit, but this way you would punish those are not milking the forum, while farmers will just move to other parts of the forum and continue with business as usual.

After careful consideration, I believe it’s best to step back for now due to ongoing issues in the local board that could affect fair merit distribution. I still plan to remain active in the local board and contribute positively, but I feel that withdrawing my application at this time is the most responsible decision. The people taking advantage of the forum are disheartening, and I've lost the motivation to help the local board now.
Will be locking this thread in a few days.
Good of you to identify a problem in your local board and withdrew your application till the problem is solved. This means you have a living conscience, some recent merit sources don't care about any cheating if they aren't even cheating themselves. But if I may ask, you have applied for a merit source since 2018 and it wasn't approved. Why still withdrawing, was there signs that theymos was about to approve your application now?

Indeed, it’s easy to create multiple Telegram accounts. Even though it requires a number, scammers will always find a way, either they pay someone or buy new SIM cards and get them KYC-approved for their use. As far as I know, in the Philippines, even with SIM registration, there’s no limit on how many SIM numbers a person can register.

Since I still tried this year to up this application with facts, I thought that it would be considered. I didn't lose hope that maybe there could still be a chance, but then this happened, so I withdrew it.

Even if you do became a merit source by miracle granted by admin, afaik, you are not required to exhaust your monthly allocated sMerits, right? Unspent smerits would rest every month. And nobody is forcing you to send merits to local members! Is there any rules that says, sources are required to distribute merits only in local section? If not and if you really believe there are abuses (it seems there are, looking at the posts), then why not distribute it globally to deserving posts! Surely there are many posts worth meriting! Won't you agree? Just sharing my two sats..

You don't even need a sim card as there are bunch of virtual number services that you can use to create a Telegram account. And nobody is forcing you to send merits to local members! Yep, you are not forced to spend your allocation in local board so if there's not enough merit worthy posts in your local board, better to spend your allocation in other parts of the forum.

You don't even need a sim card as there are bunch of virtual number services that you can use to create a Telegram account. I know it existed before, but I had no idea it’s still around until now. That actually makes things a lot easier. And iirc there was something called Multigram before, where you could switch accounts from one app. Not sure if it still exists today though.

I checked the multigram which is third-party telegram client where you can log in more number of accounts in a single device itself but with official, the limit is capped at 3 if I am not wrong. But you don't even a third party client when there is one from telegram itself which is called telegram X and officially from the telegram where there is no limit on the number of accounts you can login there.

Recently there have been multiple cases of merit's abuse in some local board around the forum not just one exceptional to you local board alone, withdrawal is ok since he updated the ops recently and his application is still pending approval, so if he have lost his motivation, coming openly to withdraw that intention is best thing to do.

I checked that a long time ago, maybe they changed it now. I’m not sure anymore since I only use one Telegram account. Anyway, thanks for the info, that might actually help since OP mentioned something about Telegram verification to prevent multiple accounts. But you don't even a third party client when there is one from telegram itself which is called telegram X and officially from the telegram where there is no limit on the number of accounts you can login there.
This is another information i learned, thanks.
