There are several different types of Bitcoin clients. The most secure are full nodes like Bitcoin Core, which will follow the rules of the network no matter what miners do. Even if every miner decided to create 1000 bitcoins per block, full nodes would stick to the rules and reject those blocks.

Probably not for a long time to come ..... like tim-tams said it was disabled because of a hack and its not come back since.

I was also kinda wondering since I went on a hiatus and when I got back it was suddenly disabled.
Well at least the posts above cleared it up for me.
A question though, how did the hack have anything to do with the avatars again?

Not sure if details were ever made public on that. The changing of avatars were exploited to gain access to the forum. I'd like to change mine too long time already Theymos has stated that he can remove the avatar if you wish, but not change it. |

I'm stuck with Homer But yeh since that hack was most-likely a backdoor placed way earlier and the avatar code was audited a bit more, in theory it could be enabled again. But I can understand theymos worry just in case there is still a bug in it. IMO, at least "choosing an avatar" could be enabled (without the uploading part.) |
