Blockchain, putting it simply, is a database. There's already a lot of research developments concerning blockchain out there. To my knowledge, I think the most famous one is applying it to smart grids. And just recently this May, Microsoft and Amazon announces they're adding blockchain to their cloud computing services.

Blockchain technology can be used in many aspects, such as in terms of health that can be used to store data of all types of diseases along with medications that need to be administered and store data from any patient suffering from the same disease.
For the music world, blockchain can also be used to store all data for proprietary rights and copyrights of artwork. It is intended to prevent the pelagiat for any registered artwork and to strengthen the existing data.

Blockchain acts as a public ledger for crypto currencies. It is a decentralized encrypted database whose data can not be altered quite easily. Just serving as a public ledger for crypto currencies is not its only use. Look at the potential of the blockchain technology, we can implement it in various sectors of activities which requires transparency. For example, think about the voting system. If somehow all votes of individual can be recorded on the blockchain, there is no way the voting system can be rigged.

There are a lot of uses for the blockchain tech that isn't limited only to cryptocurrencies. Other banks and big names in business are trying to see whether they can integrate the said tech into their own platforms and protocols, and the way I see it, blockchain would be very useful in logistics which require sorting and arranging data. Literally almost every automated service can integrate blockchain if the engineers can be so kind to learn about it and make things easier for the end-user. Our future would, I think, be largely blockchain dependent and may spark yet another industrial revolution.

It's too early to tell for sure. Thousands of startups and companies tell us that they will use blockchain to solve almost any problem in the world, but so far there's no good working example that show how blockchain is used in some industry. Also, it's not entirely correct to compare different blockchains, because blockchain is very closely tied to its parent network, and there are lots of different project configurations - there are private and public networks, permissioned and permissionless, small network and big networks, hierarchical and peer-to-peer and so on - public and open blockchains like Bitcoin have proved themselves to be working and stable, but the same has not been proven for all those other kinds of experimental blockchains. Bitcoin has already repelled many attacks, time will tell whether other blockchains are resistant to attacks or not.
