Possible consequences of the txID Mutation DDoS?

OK, we all know by now that some wallets like Satoshi's own Bitcoinqt can display funky balances and that it could be used to scam exchanges out of some Bitcoins but apart from that: What are the consequences? Could the whole Bitcoin network be brought to a grinding halt? Could somebody steal some coins somewhere else? Please state below and explain why. Added Bonus for quotes or citations!

keeps track of all the mutated txs and says that we are approaching the 60k tx limit per day of THE WHOLE NETWORK. Does that mean the attacker could basically take up a big chunk of all transactions with his dust and mutate all the other valid transaction going through?

i think an update will be pushed out the coming days or weeks that makes this whole issue a thing of the past. Give the devs a few days to work on it. It will be sortet eventually.
