So I am setting up a trade with a guy on this forum. He wants me to install Teamviewer 9 to prove to him that I really have the coins that I want to sell to him. So my question because I have never used teamviewer 9, nevermind teamviewer at all. Is it safe if I install teamviewer 9 on my laptop? Does he then have access to my wallet? I have my wallet on an USB stick. Please give me some information.

I use Teamviewer as an RDP so I can access my home computer at work.
If you provide him access, he might be able to control your computer, and could access your wallet.
There probably is a view-only mode...not sure how it works or not.
If you leave Teamviewer Open, you can access your computer as long as you have the proper login and password. Definitely seems sketchy to me.

This is dumb. Tell the guy to piss up a rope, because he is trying to steal from you.
Look up how to sign messages. That will prove you own the coins without giving him anything more than a string of text.

I would not go for it with this requirement. He may be trying to trick you into letting him control your pc, in which case he had access to any wallets that are currently on it.
Signing a message with an address holding the required amount of coins is the standard way of proving ownership. Go for that.

Teamviewer is remote admin software, if you allow a connection the other person can not only view what is on your desktop but remote control your computer, this is a big no no. Your probably dealing with a scammer that wants to steal your coins and or instal malware on your computer.
If anyone ever wants proof that you own the coins you say you own all you need to do is sign a message with the address in the QT-client that holds the coins. you can then sent the signed message to the other person and he can verify that you infact are the owner of a certain address.

Yeah, probably a scammer. Since he knows you've never used it, he knows you probably won't have the proper settings on it, and will be able to control your computer. As a side note, TeamViewer is a great substitute for those who use to use LogMeIn (Before they started charging for their free service). Has better functionality I believe than LogMeIn anyway! And no..i don't work for either, or in any related field. I've been looking for a good substitute and found TeamViewer to be the best. |

Sorry I am a noob with regarding trading, so how exactly do I do this? How about a screenshot of my wallet to show the balance? Depends on the wallet-software you use. But look for an option called "sign message". You then select one of your addresses (that contains the coins), type in any message, for example "I, <name> control the Bitcoin address <address>" (replacing the fields between brackets) and click sign (or whatever the button is called in your software). It will then produce a line of text that looks like gibberish. You send the other party the address you've used, the original message and the gibberish-text. In any wallet-software and on several websites, he can input these items and it will verify that the signature matches the address. He can look up the address on blockchain.info to see how many coins it holds. This technique is (currently) impossible to fake. Only the person that has the private key to an address can generate a valid signature. It is therefore the standard way to prove that you own an address or a certain amount of coins. edit: However, if he is a scammer, he will most likely back out if you propose to give him a signed message. |

Tell him NO and use join.me instead. Thats a legit web-based version and he would have to "request control" and as long as you don't say YES you should be fine.
What wallet do you use? There of course is the *sign* thing...

If he is being that anal about it and you really want to sell you could always use http://www.twitch.tv/ to stream your desktop live without the need to install a remote admin tool. |
