Being new to the process, I spent my first 24 hrs mining for MMC using a powerful laptop.

Well, it's definitely fun but not sure if it's worth it economically (with the present hardware).

I think I'll invest a few hundred in hardware and do do some more.

What altcoin would you recommend? I'd rather not risk and mine a stable one.

the most stable and well respected alt coin now is LTC. you can trade LTC for USD(U.S dollars) and there are many respectable pools to mine on... there are alot of other coins, that WILL make you more money, but LTC is the most well known and is considerded the silver to BTC'S "gold".
