Introducing MarbleCards

What are MarbleCards?

MarbleCards enables people to save digital memories as crypto collectibles. These collectibles are called MarbleCards.



When you find an article, video or anything else you like that has a URL, you can “marble” it into a crypto collectible card. MarbleCards is based on the ERC721 protocol and every URL can only be marbled once. When you buy a MarbleCard, it’s yours to save, share or trade.







Every MarbleCard have a unique and beautiful pattern that is generated from the content found at the URL at the time it is marbled. Some might only be of interest to you, while others are in high demand. Anyone can create a MarbleCard but once it is created, it is available for everyone to bid on for a limited time (using a Dutch auction). If someone else buys the card in the auction, the one who initiated the auction is paid a share of that sale.

Another share of the sale is paid out to the owners of the highest ranking cards.

With MarbleCards, you can collect historic moments from the Internet, your favorite bands, movies or sport champions. You can collect memes and show that you discovered them early, before they spread all over the Internet. It’s up to you and the community to decide what is valuable.







How do I buy a card?

When you find a link you want, you paste it on the platform to see if it’s available for marbling. If it's available and you want to create the card, you pay the initiate auction fee. What happens then is a public dutch action is created for that card. Anyone can see that auction and buy the card before you. If someone else buys it, you are paid a % in creators fee. If no-one buys it before the auction time runs out you get it. You also have the option to buy it in the auction and get the finders fee as a discount.



What links can I marble?

Any unique web page can be marbled. However, only 5 sites (Wikipedia, Twitter, Youtube, Reddit and IMDb) are available for marbling for the first couple of weeks. Check roadmap for more detailed info about this.

How are the marble patterns generated?

MarbleCards uses an algorithm with different inputs such as content popularity, site quality etc and based on that a unique artwork is created for each card. Better attributes = a more beautiful card.  

How are duplicates handled?

To reduce bad actions, exactly how it works can’t be stated. It is however a mix of link matching, text analysis and image analysis to minimize chances of there being two cards leading to the same web page.

How are URL changes handled?

The card is a snapshot of what the link looked like when it was bought. We use the canonical url in order to not get any duplicates. Additionally, there is a few different situation that gives different outcomes;

*Updated stories*
On news sites urls can be changed when the headline of a story changes. However the site in almost all cases uses some sort of redirect or similar that makes it possible to follow from the old link.

*Updated pages*
On wikipedia, imdb or similar there is not that many changes. If there for some reason is a change there will be a redirect that makes it possible to follow the link. If a site changes domain from domain1 to domain2 they want to keep google rank so they want old urls to forward to the new content. We follow redirects so will find the new content.

*Misprints*
Owning a link that was miss-printed can be of lot of value. When someone publishes an article that should not have been published it can be marbled into a card for eternity, just like any other URL.

I'm Johan, project lead at Marble. We are working hard at making this as great as it possibly can be. We are also putting together a collection of a few hundred cards that will be pre-marbled by us and used for giveaways in our Telegram, auctioned in an item offering before mainnet to build hype, and as marketing rewards for influencers. What we are going for is the marble pattern will evolve based on rarity!

Common cards pattern will be white/gray pretty much, whereas the rarest cards will have great colors such as gold, purple etc.

Rarity is based on a few things (to not be able to game the system we cant disclose the exact details) but in short its determined by popularity/quality of the site, social media activity for the link, inbound links to the link and additionally performance in the games built on top of marble.

MarbleCards is first and foremost a new standard that allows ownership of the web in a completely new way. For the first time, websites/pages and what they represent are made scarce, collectible and conceptually appealing by turning them into a collectible card game using ERC721 tokens. Every url can only be marbled into one collectible card. It is now possible to own a piece of internet history that you care about. It is now possible to show that you were first to discover a meme.

For utility of each card, the goal is to have as many games as possible built on top of the card standard... we are currently building a ”curation game” that will reward players who discover and distribute great content early. Think of it as the players become professional meme traders.

We are also in talks with a few other developers on building other more regular game experiences... but our main focus right now is to make the MarbleCards standard a real value layer of the internet!

I have not seen anyone else attempting to bring ownership of web by turning each url into a crypto collectible. By being first, we have a strong case to make MarbleCards the number one value representation of web urls. To further strengthen our position, we invest heavily in storytelling and technology around the cards. For example, we've put a lot of resources in to our generative arts, to make sure every card is unique, beautiful and something desirable to own. Adding to that, heaving gameplay and utility for each card is very important to us. Here is an excerpt from our whitepaper in regards to how cards can be utilized:

Dividends
Half of the price paid from all cards when they are first marbled, deducted by any finders fee, are set aside to a pool. Each day the best MarbleCards, decided by various calculations in relative to the MarbleCards and their Marble Score, receives dividends from the pool.


Meme investing
Built in to every MarbleCard is a bonding curve investment layer.
Players can invest in any card to take part in its revenues. For every player to buy into a card, the price goes up.

Think of it as the players become professional meme traders.

As an investor of the card you receive part of the dividend paid out to that card and can at any time sell your share for a potential profit.

Publishing
One of the first games under development is a content curation game, where you buy cards, get them published in a form of token curated registry, get an audience etc.

Can be resembled to a decentralized Reddit. Players have incentives to 1. Curate good content for rewards and 2. Get attention to their own cards/card investments for them to appreciate in value.
