The article is available for your Kindle (but not Kindle app on PC?!) for $2.99/mo. http://www.amazon.com/The-New-Yorker/dp/B001O2SCKI/Note that there is a 14 day free trial where you can cancel the subscription within that time and get refunded. I haven't tried this myself b/c I only have the PC app anyway. It's not available for people in Australia either, according to the Amazon page. That's right. I think only USA as I had my Kindle account "located in" Canada and had to change it to USA to get the price to show up, and then I found out it doesn't support download to PC app anyway.

Concerning the full article as opposed to the abstract: That was absolutely the best Bitcoin article I've ever seen, by far. Joshua Davis has been researching this for months. If I can find a New Yorker on a store shelf, I'm going to buy it.

Is it actually possible to pay 0BTC? When I try to enter 0 into the "spend coins" dialog of bitcoin version 0.4.0, I get the message "Error in amount."

It's indeed a very good article. The reporter is very talented and dedicated. He has good writing skills, and the "detective work" was well done.

Thanks; that didn't seem to be the case before, but it does now. The article says The truth is that most people don't spend the bitcoins they buy; they hoard them, hoping that they will appreciate. What's the evidence for this? Is it somehow verfiable in the block chain? He quickly identified nine ways to compromise the system and scoured Nakamoto's for an insertion point for his first attack. But when he found the right spot there was a message waiting for him. "Attack removed," it said. The same thing happened over and over again, infuriating Kaminsky. This does not seem to be literally true. Am I searching incorrectly, or are there actually explicit (but different) comments in the repository somewhere? met% git log | grep '^commit' 2> /dev/null | cut -d ' ' -f 2 | xargs -n 1 -i git diff -r {} | grep -C 3 -i remove | grep -i attack | sort -u - - added blinding for RSA and Rabin to defend against timing attacks + - added blinding for RSA and Rabin to defend against timing attacks

It's just some way of saying that any flaw the guy initially thought he could exploit had already been foreseen by Satoshi.

FWIW, I've taken the PDF posted on cryptome, transcribed it, and put some work into annotating all its claims and references: http://www.gwern.net/docs/2011-davisIf nothing else, it's much more pleasant to read and easier to quote.
