Got greeted quite a few times by this:

"Connection Problems

Sorry, SMF was unable to connect to the database. This may be caused by the server being busy. Please try again later."

Anyone shed any light on this.

This happens periodically. I'm okay with it.

This forum is huuuuuge relative to most others and the downtime is always minimal. Besides, it can't be healthy for most of us to be here, we're all just nerds watching a ticker.

By the end of next month at the latest we will have permanently left behind 3 digits. You can quote me on this.

These are the main causes for this issue:
  • High amount of people connecting to the site.
  • The settings.php isn't configured correctly.

It's a common problem for people who have a host which simply can't keep up with the users connecting or because of a misconfiguration of the settings.php. However, I should imagine the forum is reaching it's max connections which is causing the problems because it's not happening constantly which would indicate to  the settings being configured incorrectly.

Both are easily resolved by either upgrading the host or by using this documentation: Here

I needed to lock the messages table for a few minutes. It should be OK now.
