I have been solo mining for about 10 days and I had set my gui miner on my external machines on other instead of solo. It had shown it was counting shares vs counting hashes. Does this mean that I wasnt looking for a block on my bitcoin account. I had entered my ip address. I just switched it to solo. Please let me know if that matters. Thanks.

How big is your mining farm? If you don't have at least a dozen machines, you shouldn't be mining solo.

As far as I can see, the only idiots here are the people solo mining after unreasonably rejecting good advice to not do so. If you want to do stupid shit, don't expect any further help from us.

Not sure why you guys are so mad but when someone asks a question and someone replies with something not pertaining to the question why even bother posting it, if you dont like solo mining then dont do it and post that response were it belongs.

Who got mad? Only one I saw get mad in the thread was you.
To answer your question. It didn't matter. By setting it to other rather than solo GUI miner sent every 1 difficulty share (instead of just full difficulty shares) to your bitcond which rejected them.

Yes. By selecting other you simply sent additional 1-difficulty shares (useless in solo mining) to the bitcoind. Had any of those shares been full target difficulty you would have gotten a block. To reduce the load on bitcoind when GUI miner is in solo mode it only transmits the "full difficulty" hashes.

Thats how mine looked.. 'Other'.. as long as host pointed to a machine where you were running the bitcoin client in server mode you are good.. and as you said you were pointing to your IP address so you are all good. If it wasn't able to connect you wouldn't have shown work being done.. it would have just kept telling you connection problems..

I don't follow.. are you saying he was doing it right or wrong? I was running 4 machines all in 'Other' against a 5th machine running the bitcoin client in server mode with no local miners and I found 2 blocks so it works that way for sure.

Well he wasn't doing it "right" but it won't hurt to use Other to connect to solo bitcond.
Solo only sends full difficulty (aka solution) to the destination. Other sends full difficulty + all 1 difficulty hashes (aka as shares) to the destination. These are useless in solo mining but they won't hurt.
The 1 difficulty shares are worthless. They are simply used by pools for accounting purposes. Using solo option is the "right" way to do it but using "other" option won't hurt it is simply not necessary to send all useless shares to the bitcoind.

I didn't see a way to connect to a remote bitcoin client '-server' with the Solo option.. I have 4 mining rigs and I wanted them all working together.

I gotcha now. Yeah the other option will spam your bitcoind w/ 1 difficulty hashes (roughly 1.7 million for every real valid hash @ current difficulty) but it shouldn't cause any problems. The bitcoind will simply ignore those hashes because they aren't below the target.

You're not running a business mining solo at this point. You're gambling & paying for it in your electricity bill.
Those people aren't talking "shit", they're right. They have nothing to gain from lying to you. In fact, if you keep mining solo, the better for them. Though as you can see, some people actually give out valuable advice instead of trying to screw you over.
