please forgive my general naivete of cryptocurrency from a technical standpoint... my interests in it lean more towards the economics of it all.

so today Counterparty showed up on coinmarketcap.com, which immediately triggered memories of a time when I invested in a stock option and had its' value double over the space of two months...  (conveniently forgetting the time I bought an option that expired worthless, costing a greater fortune -_-;)

is a protocol like counterparty the future of such trading?  is ethereum made to do this, or is it unrelated?  are there other things in the works (like, idk, a tech startup coming out with a proprietary platform?)  your two cents, please.  apologies if I'm being too vague.  thank you!
