New rank idea: Bounty Member

I was reading marlboroza's topic "Theymos help us fight against scam ICO's" and I remembered a post by theymos:

What do the people who operate these bounties think of the newbie invasion? Also, people should not be required to post in order to get paid; that's already against the rules.

An idea I had in this vein was that upon registration you'd have to pick one of two paths:
 - "I want to discuss things"
= Banned from all money-making/spam-hotbed sections until Jr Member
 - "I want to make money"
= Banned from the more serious sections until Jr Member
= You have to pass a quiz before posting which tries to inform you about basic forum rules, how not to get banned, maybe some basic English knowledge, etc. (Quizzes are pointless to stop dedicated spammers, since an answer key will quickly be compiled, but it may help in cases where clueless people are ending up here.)

Not only newbies and Jr Members are causing problems, as time passes and merit flows to every corner of the forum there will be a lot of other ranks with pure spammers, not taking into account older accounts and hacked ones.

So, my idea is to introduce a new rank: Bounty Member.

A rank that you can get by simply checking an option in your profile, but once you do that you're locked as a Bounty Member for at least 14-30(?) days.

Now what does this rank do, or actually what can't you do without being a bounty member:
- Only bounty members can post in the bounty section (normal members can still start a topic, for obvious reason as campaign managers)

But, once you've gone the path of a bounty hunter, expect a cruel fate:
- once you try to enroll, you're going to get 3-5 questions, just like theymos suggested, you don't pass them, your bounty hunter application is thrown in the garbage bin and you can't apply for the next 30 days.
- those questions will hunt you all the time as each activity period you're going to have to answer another set.
- a large part of the forum will be closed for you, you're going to have to say goodbye to some areas and live in the wilderness of the altcoin section and local(?).
- goodbye post bursting, you're going to have to wait like a predator for a 360-600(?, again open to debate) delay between your posts, no matter what your rank is.
- there is no merit in bounty (self-explanatory)  Cool

Others can be added or some subtracted, and of course, the whole idea can be trashed away  Grin

There are several different types of Bitcoin clients. The most secure are full nodes like Bitcoin Core, which will follow the rules of the network no matter what miners do. Even if every miner decided to create 1000 bitcoins per block, full nodes would stick to the rules and reject those blocks.

People have suggested better, much better ideas and you know the rest.

The part where you put the cruel fate, is where theymos puts you on ignore. Grin

Restrictions are a big no-go for theymos ,and if a bounty hunter member isn't able to access the forum's common sections, don't expect this idea to ever be implemented by theymos.
- goodbye post bursting, you're going to have to wait like a predator for a 360-600(?, again open to debate) delay between your posts, no matter what your rank is.
I assume, this is the number of seconds?

Honestly, I am down to any new membership rank being introduced, Legendary becomes boring after a while, as there are no real perks for it. There have been suggestions for Bitcointalk pro account(no cloudfare), Silver member account, Gold member account, and a few more. There has also been suggestion for a new rank called 'mythical'. I have suggested stuff before, and it ended up in mere ashes.

Yeah, something like 99.(9)% ignore or reject

I know he is not a fan of it, but what made me think he might at least consider it for a second was his own post that I've quoted above and the fact that this is not a real restriction imposed by rank or by something like a merit requirement for a signature.
It is your own choice, you want to do bounty for an ICO on bitcointalk stick to that ....

Besides, the idea was that such a member won't be able to post it certain parts of the forum, he will still be able to read (lol, like bounty hunters are reading anything ...)
We could even have a new sub-forum, the bounty members hang-out, although I wonder who would volunteer to moderate that

Yeah, I thought it would be might encourage some users to actually read what the topic is about during the cooldown period.

In the end...whatever...I tried ... Cool

New rank idea: Bounty Member

So, my idea is to introduce a new rank: Bounty Member.
A rank that you can get by simply checking an option in your profile, but once you do that you're locked as a Bounty Member for at least 14-30(?) days.

Now what does this rank do, or actually what can't you do without being a bounty member:

But, once you've gone the path of a bounty hunter, expect a cruel fate:
- once you try to enroll, you're going to get 3-5 questions, just like theymos suggested, you don't pass them, your bounty hunter application is thrown in the garbage bin and you can't apply for the next 30 days.

Since you said that the option can be activated by ticking a box in the profile. Who do you think will click on it knowing that there are lot of restrictions when you activate it.
This your suggestion and all the previous ones are all geared towards having a forum filled with quality and useful information. In as much as bounty participants spam a lot especially on the bounty threads, they are not really responsible for all the spamming that goes on in the forum. To curb the spamming by bounty members, I think all bounty managers should be made to provide a Google form for reporting the weekly report and any bounty campaign that does not have a Google form for reporting can be deleted for spamming and breaking the forum rules.

The reason why theymos might not be a fan of restrictions because, he had imposed them before, and things didn't work out as they were intended to(newbie jail). And he is a big fan of free speech.

theymos has also said he is open to ideas where non-shitposting members can earn money from this forum:

BTW, if anyone has any ideas for simple things that these ex-nonsense-posters could usefully do to make money, I think that this'd be a good project right now. There are apparently quite a few people who were making money on the forum and could use guidance. Even though their past activities were not good for this forum, I doubt that they are useless in general.

Yeah, I thought it would be might encourage some users to actually read what the topic is about during the cooldown period.

In the end...whatever...I tried ... Cool
Maybe somebody will see this and say, I can do better > theymos impressed > problems solved  Grin
The cooldown period is fine, 6-10 minutes gap is fine between posts.

I think a better idea would be what I suggested recently in that to become a Junior Member you would require at least some merit received (at the minimum 1). That way, if they don't get any merit they would remain a newbie indefinitely and be confined to being a bounty member by default.

Also, I think we should look at removing signatures completely from some of the lower ranks. If we made it so you only got a signature once you became a Member/Senior or above then you would only be able to earn here monetarily once you had earned your right to rise through the ranks. This would stop shitposters signing up here just to earn by posting one liners constantly. A lot of the new sig spammers here will never make it past Junior Member because of that but most crapcoin campaigns will accept them and pay for whatever they post and this is a huge issue.

One merit required to be a Junior Member doesn't make sense.
I would suggest at least 5 merits, instead of one point like your suggestion.
In addition, I think that 20 merits to become Member might be a new good requirement, too.
Of course, I fortunately to be a Member with only 10 merits.  Grin

I don't think so and believe that @Theymos won't have plan for such extremely strict approach.

I'm not sure what part of my post you're replying to there, but theymos has already stated that the ultimate solution will be to remove signatures completely if the merit system doesn't work and there's no suggestion more strict than that. I'm trying to make suggestions to try stop that from happening and removing them from the lower ranks who are the vast majority of the problem will go a long way in curbing that. If you haven't earned the right to your rank here then you shouldn't be able to earn either (and the behaviour of all the newbies who have heard you can earn by spamming or copy and pasting shouldn't effect everyone else either, especially when those who have caused the problem in the first place will leave en mass never to return as soon as signatures are removed.

I know, I support it, but I also know that is has been proposed a lot of times and it has lead to nothing.

But theymos did reply in this topic [Request] 1 Merit to become junior member and access to bounties sub and he seems to have at least acknowledge that there are members that are here just for bounties and that they should be restricted a bit.
Note that this is probably the only post theymos gave hint he might consider introducing some kind of "voluntary" newbie jail.

An idea I had in this vein was that upon registration you'd have to pick one of two paths:
 - "I want to discuss things"
= Banned from all money-making/spam-hotbed sections until Jr Member
 - "I want to make money"
= Banned from the more serious sections until Jr Member

My "idea" is basically a copy of his but extended to all members and with the option to get in and out (with a cooldown period to prevent abuse).

As I said in another post, it would be nice if we could make a list of those ideas and suggestions and maybe theymos might come and say:  this not, this will be done, I consider this one but not yet, stop talking about this one as it will never be done.

One thing that would be useful for me would be the ability to include a jpg banner in my sig. This could be a thin strip, and maybe about 3/4 of the width of the forum banners. It would also need to include an affiliate link. Sponsors could be limited to certain approved categories such as travel, hosting, domain sales, market sites etc. Its use to promote personal political sites would also be great,

Bounty Member?
This forum is made for BITCOIN which we can discuss what's happening or anything that is related on bitcoin.

Why some of members here are so crazy when it comes to bounty campaigns. Yes it helps but we are here to learn not just to earn.

This user dharmapalchen will be an example of a totally bounty member. As what we can see his/her posts.

Let's see some of his/her posts.

This kind of users you want to have own ranks? Rank specialization? They don't have any contribution in here.
In behalf this will easily determine if a user is a bounty hunter or not due to its rank tagged with the user.

It will only be useful if Bounty Member rank is a paid membership  like what's copper member made for.

I dunno. I'm sure it will be the very last resort for him but I get the feeling one day he'll just snap and remove them to solve the issue instantly. Far too much workload is being placed upon him and nothing is getting done at all. The forum just gets worse in the process and good ideas to improve it are completely ignored without even being commented on or discussed at all. How difficult is it to punish campaign and hold them to some actual standards? Merit requirements should be added to become Junior or signatures removed from lower ranks. More sub board mods should be assigned to spread out workload. Those three simple things would work wonders and improve the situation here greatly, but nothing changes and things get worse until the day it's just easier to go nuclear.

...They don't have any contribution in here.
They have contributed views count and website traffic.

It will only be useful if Bounty Member rank is a paid membership  like what's copper member made for.
And half of members will  move to other forum, Bitcointalk will have less advertising tenants and lack of finance to maintenance forum and pay for staffs.

Why would somebody advertise on a forum that is made up only by bots posting crap and people logging in just to post their bounty links?

Besides, funding is not an issue

Right, I don't care about making money from the forum personally. (I've actually thought about getting rid of the forum ads, since it's often a big headache and the forum has enough reserves for a long time, but operating at a significant loss while there's money basically just sitting on the table feels wrong, even if the level of loss is sustainable for quite a while.)

I wonder what the defcon status is currently for the nuclear option?

6?
