So, I keep hearing about this "Silk Road" place, but I am not convinced it really exists. People keep saying that Silk Road is the majority of bitcoin commerce, but I am not sure if I have ever seen somebody say they use it.

Thoughts?

You might find something legal on Silk Road, but that would most likely be a sheer accident.

OP: Why would you suspect that it doesn't exist?  Install Tor and go check it out for yourself.

I still think some people overestimate the percentage of bitcoin economy flowing through Silk Road.

Who are these some people, and what are their overestimations?

I bet every person who has replied in this thread has a completely different number or percentage of Bitcoin users that use Silk Road in their head.   If I had a pie chart of all Bitcoin users, I would only estimate that 4% are using Silk Road at all, with maybe 8% having tried using the site at least once.

Never been there.  From what I gather it's real but the scale of the operation is much smaller than people think.  It's an e-bay for drugs that doesn't have that many members.

I saw somebody say yesterday that most of the bitcoin economy went through silk road, I will try to find it ...

hahahah, bullshit.   I see it as such a small percent.   But I can only base my personal bullshit guess on what I see overall, unfortunately that is only the vocal users, which I guess the smarter Silk Road users would not be, so I guess this is possible anyone into Bitcoin is supporting a drug economy of some sorts.

If this is the case though, less "legit" users and business' need to know about Bitcoin, and more drug users need to get in, as then they would be the ones actually making Bitcoin work.

And if that is the case, time for everyone to stick Bitcoin fliers in their local bong stores.   Which they should be doing anyways honestly.

There's plenty of legal stuff there, actually. Never bothered to make a purchase, though.

Have been able to nab a vps for a pretty decent price off of there my self. Though the prices for some things can be ridiculous, and things like demonoid invites are pointless to be listed since they can be gotten pretty easily otherwise.

its an online site only accessible by tor that people sell drugs and stuff on.

wired or some blog or something did a story about it and it blew up in the mainstream media....drew quite a bit of attention to bitcoin (bitcoin is used as the payment method on silk road).

in any case, (especially after all the media attention) it seems like a good way to get a visit from the dea, if you ask me.

Getting illegal things shipped to me would make me ultra-paranoid. I can't believe anyone does it.

Oh, no thanks, here in my country, it is mandatory death sentence for drugs.  But thanks for the information.  I don't think Tor is accessible for me too, I guess for my case, it is a good thing Smiley

It is basically an anonymous e-bay of sorts, though it can only be accessed by using the Tor proxy network.

The DEA has never given a shit about small-time stuff. That's for state and local PD. Most of the time when a dog sniffs out a little bit of weed in the mail, a first-time offender gets a nasty letter from the postal inspector in place of their package.

Controlled delivery busts take time, money, and manpower to set up, and authorities like to make their efforts seem like they're worth the trouble. Generally $50 worth of pot isn't.
