I am becoming more and more interesting in the mining of alt coins and would like to start as soon as I can.

I am looking for opinions on the type of graphics card I need to mine alt coins? Specifically one of avg. power/price

I would appreciate your opinions

Thanks

I believe the best card would be 280X (much cheaper than 290X) Cheesy

Agree.

I use R9 270x and I'm satisfied (with respect to consumption and noise level).

The Gigabyte HD7950 WF3 offers great value for money, they provide a decent hashrate while consuming minimal power.  If you are unable to source the HD7950 I would recommend the Asus R9 280X DirectCU II, while this card consumes more power, it is able to produce an impressive 820 KH/s whilst mining Scrypt coins.

First of all, AMD cards are superior when it comes to mining compared to Nvidia's cards. And if you choose AMD, which I think you should, I'd recommend R9 280X. I haven't had any personal experience with it but it seems to be the most popular card for scrypt mining.
