Hello, I'm new to Electrum. Trying to find something more secure than an online wallet with all the thefts going on lately... Electrum seems like a good choice and I can use it on my Ubuntu computer as well as my Android phone.

My problem, as stated in the title, is that on my Ubuntu installation, I don't have any Receive addresses. What's up with that?

Bitcoin mining is now a specialized and very risky industry, just like gold mining. Amateur miners are unlikely to make much money, and may even lose money. Bitcoin is much more than just mining, though!

New install, and entered seed and now no receiving address?

There is a plus next to receive - should be 5 addresses there by default.

I think that if the client never connects or drops the connection attempt it doesn't show the receiving address. Try switching servers in the Network window (red/green dot)

Well, there's no "plus" next to receive.

I installed Electrum, ran it and created a new wallet when prompted. In the receive tab, there are the headings "Address, Label, Balance, Tx".

I closed Electrum, deleted the wallet (nothing in it), restarted and created another new wallet. Now there are 5 receiving addresses (and 3 change). Still no "plus" though. Should it be there?

It shows up as a down arrow on Linux. When you click it the addresses collapse under the receiving heading. Click it again to show the addresses.
