The giver has sent 42 merits 4 times (at least), which is quite curious. In the other cases it seems more justified but not in this one. I think maybe the giver is also from the Philippines, otherwise I can’t understand it, but I don’t think he’s look at the post history of the bounty hunter.

Apart from that, merit is not moderated, and I doubt he is going to be red tagged for this. He just seems to have a peculiar way of giving merits.

Merit isn't moderated.

As far as giving merit to this user, https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=1719874

I guess he went with the flow/Philippines sentiment/rewarding a local user without going through user's post history, sometimes it happens.

IMO, I don't see any malicious intent.

I don't know if he's a merit source, but overall, sentiments getting better of merits would be bad (rewarding 1,2,5 in locals on multiple posts is good, but 42 for a post is hefty and easy for a spammer to simply level up)

I think that's the point. When he fist sent 42 merits, people had some doubts. The second times he sent 42 merits, still remained some doubts, but less. When he sent the third time, people thought: "Well, it's normal. He did it before".

In this case I think it's not worth for such post. Even if he's Filipino, a couple of merits would be ideal. Who knows if he's selling merit?

I think he is not a merit source. Merit source would never give that much amount of merit to a single post no matter how informative the post is.

This post not belongs to Meta since merit are not moderated by forum. I expect this thread belongs to Reputation board. Mostly similar case there.

Look like he is merit source but I am not sure. Theymos can confirm it. I don't know why he use 42 only for big amount send merit Grin. Where ever he send 42 merit that post are really not deserve much merit especially those post are mention by OP he isn't deserve single merit. This is absolutely merit abuse. But it's not moderated by forum. Also I think no one will tag him. He have also green trust.

I don't know why he use 42
42 is the "Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything".

Roslinpl is a respected signature designer, but has a weird posting style. He starts most posts with "Hello" and ends with "Best wishes".
For reference: his full Merit history.

When he fist sent 42 merits, people had some doubts. The second times he sent 42 merits, still remained some doubts, but less. When he sent the third time, people thought: "Well, it's normal. He did it before".
He sent 42 Merit to theymos and satoshi first. Nobody is going to think that's abuse.
The third time, he send it to this post, which can be argued to deserve it if you really want to.

Meriting this post with 42 Merit on the other hand, is clear abuse clearly not worth it:
I hope someone from my country, Philippines, made it on the top 200! Smiley Generosity is one of our Country's many many many Aces!
The Merit system was supposed to stop this bounty spammer from ranking up, now he's a Member.

roslinpl is a well-respected signature designer here on the forum, there is no need to question his motivation when giving away merit.

As Theymos has stated, users are free to distribute their sMerit as they please, whether that includes giving a newbie member 200 merits for a one-word post, or distributing 42 to whichever posts he deems worthy on a sporadic basis.

I really don't get why we have threads questioning the merit distribution of a well-respected member? If he wanted to give 42 merits to his buddy, honestly who cares? It's his prerogative, he's clearly not involved in some merit farming ring, or abusing the merit system, so it's not a problem.

Nice explanation about 42, thanks. Regarding send merit to theymos and satoshi no one questioning. Question is other 2 thread. Is it really deserve 42 merit ? I don't think so. Last one those are mention OP this is really I consider abuse. I don't know by others. Yes he is well reputed and potential member's on forum. It's doesn't mean no one can question about his mistake. Abuse is abuse for every one.

Well I didn't defense him. My point was he properly merited in the first 3 times to make precedents for his 4th time, which is undoubtedly an abuse.

I also think there should be a limitation on how many merits are awarded per sending to avoid this.

42 is a lucky number for roslinpl

He won Euro million where 42 was one of the number of the set.
07 - 19 - 26 - 42 - 50        04 - 09

As you can see there are other numbers as well but somehow he considers 42 is his luckiest number among all.  Grin

PS: roslinpl has the right to give his sMerits to anyone he wants besides only he knows the reason that OP is looking for.

I don't think he is either, and if he's not then he won't be able to give that many more 42-merit awards.  That's the consolation.  I agree that a stupid post making a statement about the generosity of Filipinos didn't deserve that many merits, especially not for a typical bounty hunter.  Those are the people who shouldn't be ranking up.

Roslinpl might be one of those people who just doesn't realize how much merit is actually worth, but who knows.  He did give 42 merits to both satoshi and Theymos, which is pretty much a waste.  In any case, I don't think anyone is going to tag rosinpl--and that's the right call, IMO.  I don't think he did anything wrong.

Maybe we should ask Theymos and Satoshi how much they paid for the 42 merits too! Such rampant merit abuse!

According to TP, it's OK if a green trust member sends 42 merits for a one liner bounty hunter. I don't know what is going on here, there are too many double standards and everybody is doing whatever they want. if people got tagged for 10 merits, why should we give a free pass to 42 merits?

However I don't think a temporary tag could harm anybody, just let them know that these kinds of merit transactions are frowned upon and remove their tag after a few weeks. please do this for everybody and not for a selected few.

First of all, I'm happy that somehow one of my fellows citizens received enough Merits to rank up to Member but the thing is, I really don't think that the post deserved such amount of Merits. I checked rosinpl's Merit history and I've noticed that although 42 is his favourite number, he still gave 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, and 9 Merits to other posts which only means 42 is not the amount of Merit he always give as his default. He should somehow give atleast 5 Merits or something less than 42 to that post but why 42? It doesn't deserved even 10 Merits IMHO. I don't doubt him anyway, maybe he has some reasons in his mind. I think we should hear his side.

By the way, I really agree the bold part of Coolcryptovator's reply. No matter how respectful a member is, if he/she committed any kind of abuse or violated any rules, he/she should face the consequences. This is only being fair to other members.

How can we know that he selling the merits or not ??
I'm not defending rosinpl's side and I'm not offending him either. But I think he's not selling Merits.

I wouldn't say he is doing it for a shady reason. Just let it slide my man. No point arguing. Its probably justified.

There's always a difference between clear blatant trust/account farming and just giving away merits.
