Bitcoin mining is now a specialized and very risky industry, just like gold mining. Amateur miners are unlikely to make much money, and may even lose money. Bitcoin is much more than just mining, though!

Does the new client not recognize wallets from clients circa January 2013?

I just did the same exercise and all went off OK.

What OS are you running? Give a bit more detail and I can try to help.

e.g. is this a new computer?  Can you toss this wallet.dat somewhere else (or where it came from) and try that?  Tell me all about your situation.

Do you even mine?
