As the title suggests, this post is all about getting a merit

Be sarcastic
If you observe someone posting sarcastic remarks (or sometimes attacking the OP, well yeah there is a fallacy term for this - ad hominem).

Per wikipedia, Ad hominem is a fallacious argumentative strategy whereby genuine discussion of the topic at hand is avoided by instead attacking the character, motive, or other attribute of the person making the argument, or persons associated with the argument, rather than attacking the substance of the argument itself.

So in order to gain a merit, you should attack the posters! If you see someone posting something then make a claim and say that person is merit begging.  Another way is highly criticize the OP and say that the his post is redundant and the same with other posts.  One way of doing this is instruct the OP to use the search button and discourage him to make another post in the future.  The more negativity, the better.

Report shitposters
Make quality posts to gain a merit? Nah! Do you truly believe that?!!!
By reading and reading you will just learn but not rank-up! Then upon reading more you will see that you (almost) cannot post anything something new anymore.  The search button is there for you.

Hence, in line with the previous method (i.e. be sarcastic), then be a critic and judge other users and report them as shitposters and spammers.  It is better if you make a comment on the post of that user or make another thread in the Meta board for people to see your post.

Note: just attack your fellow newbie because if you attack a high-ranked members (especially a merit source), then you will be included in their ignored list and you will not get any merit.

Always Agree with High-Ranked Members
High-ranked members means merits!
Hence, if a high-ranked members criticize someone, better make a post highlighting the fact that you agree to the statement of that high-ranked members (yes, even how ridiculous it is).  You know, they have better trust rating than you and than other newbies hence their rallying power is higher than low-ranked members.

Just follow what is popular (and it does not mean if it is the right thing or not but just follow, yes yes! blindly follow).  Follow the norm and never oppose it.  If they say that the merit system is working - then it is working.  Worship the merit system just like it is your creator and never ever mention its weaknesses nor its shortcomings.  Just highlight its strengths.  If they say that Red is Blue - then Red is Blue! By saying that Blue is Blue is wrong and you will just lose an opportunity to get a merit.

By doing the tips above, Merit will come to you in no time!

You have forgotten one of the most important ways to get merit: always begin or end your sentence with "sir!" When you talk to higher ranked members, eg. "Very nice project, i am sure it will be successful, sir!"

Advice to the Newbies reading this:
This post has been made for a poster that has tried too hard to earn merits, by copy-pasting other`s people great contents, by complaining, by copy-pasting his/her own texts in order to seek for merits, by beginning useless posts, by playing with the rules, et al.

Do not believe that, and of course, do not follow these instructions, for they are breaking the spirit of the forum. You can be critic, and people probably will be, at some point, critic with you. But if you take other`s opinion too personally then you become in a frustrated-poster, as the one creating this useless post.
To spread hate and classism is never going to help you to earn any single merit, on the contrary, you probably end banned at some time.

Now, Merits are something that really concerns you, and I get it. Just read a lot in the forum without the thought of how to learn merits but the honest intention of learning in here, engage conversations only if you have something to add, chill and do not think too much about merits, for if you become obsessed, you will stuck at some point. There are also wonderful initiatives, like the FitToTalk project, dedicated to those with a weak English, and, actually, you can earn merits by joining in there and creating good content, it will be revised in order to improve your English skills, and then you will be able to post it in here. This project, for example, is being run for some high-ranked people in here, volunteers trying for you people to improve your posting quality and be able to rank-up: https://fittotalk.com/english-talk/index.php
So, actually, some people in here is investing personal time in trying to help you guys to rank-up.

Yes, the forum can be sometimes quite hard, for, from time to time, you will receive some bad quotes to your own post. But it happens to everybody in here, Legendary includes, it is not about ranking, it is just about the place you are in: a really big one, with a lot of different minds, and you can always find someone disagreeing you. If you take it too personally, again, you will become, as the OP, a sad frustrated guy. So chill and take the things as they come: just opinions, nothing else.

EDIT: I see you have earned a merit for spreading hate and complains about the forum. Annoying, it shows how actually the forum is in a really bad shape.

Better to work with full confidence in your words and make meaningful posts rather than supporting and/or spitting out spam and shit. Learning more about most of the new things (this one's for newbies) that they're unfamiliar with is the best way to be constructive later, as well they should learn to use Google and Bitcointalk's search feature before asking a question that's been asked a hundred times. Speaking where necessary, and while being a newbie, speaking something totally out of a newbie's reach of minds is the best way one can earn merits.

If you're really interested in knowing how to earn a merit for sure, go to this thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3055616.0 and follow it, check each round and check the members who won the challenges, see their posts and you'll learn what it takes to earn a merit.

Actually ,  It is too hard to do good work and focused in it without any incentive that's why the "OP" got all the idea.
OP saw the Merit that people got for criticizing (may 1 ,2 or 10)  but OP completely overlooked how much merits that constructive people   get.

If OP can give me a single example where somebody gathered 100+ Merit by this strategy ? But some people gathered in excess of 500 Merits by posting good articles and topic.

PS: For Newbies, If this is such a good strategy then OP might be bathing in pool of Merits so you can safely discard it.

Of course. I used to have the OP on my ignored list, due to his/her behaviour. I believe in second opportunities, but it is sad to see that someone can be led by his own frustration instead of learning and try to see what`s going wrong.

Totally agree. You can see some profiles that have already hit the mark and become Full Members in no time. I also know a couple of cases of people earning enough merits to become Hero Members in no time, as @DdmrDdmr, for instance.
I get the frustration, but I think one of the best mindset you can have is just to relax and think about what are you doing wrong. The OP`s mean problem is that he/she has never tried to change his mindset, but to spare this kind of stuff, classism, hate, envy.

OP, you write quite well, but you need some originality. I think you can actually become a good one, you should be able to earn merits, just think about what are you doing wrong and stop hoping to receive a merit for any single post you create.
Sometimes I put a lot of work into a post and receive no merits for that (I don`t care since merits mean nothing to me), and it is just how it works, it depends on circumstance, so relax, man.

Anyway, ignored again.

If you are junior and have signature, then you will be given a merit  unwillingly.
You must be active in forum and help other person.

It's like doing anything just to get merit even if it takes to kill a person or something. I'd rather be earning merit with your OWN ideas and more. If a person follow these instructions is like that you want to be someone else and not yourself just to achieve he/she achieved.

This is the best advise I read in a long while. If I may add. Stop wishing getting merit. But seriously, really stop wishing getting one and try to contribute to the community and im sure you'll get noticed one day.

I don't agree with this statement of the OP

"Always Agree with High-Ranked Members"

When we have something that we can't agree with them then I don't see any wrong of refusing it. We don't want to be "yes sir" people for everything whether those are wrong or right.

I believe that the only productive way to gain merit points is to share our knowledge in a best possible way. There is no secret formula for it and even if there is any such formula then there is no guaranty that it will earn merit points for you. One should never seek merits in any unethical way as there is a risk of getting a red trust feedback or even getting his account banned. On the other hand, this feature is still new and hence it will take time for the members to inculcate the habit of using it.

Go and see your face from mirror and then you will find out how "shitposter" looks like.  Grin

You have plagiarised one of your post and most probably you get banned. Because plagiarism is considered as serious offence in bitcointalk forum.

I was going to sit on the fence with this post as i see it from both sides of the 'argument'.

What the OP says on here i believe is part tongue in cheek/ part serious. I actually do agree with some of the OP views, i have been a victim of i'm "merit fishing" or being treated with contempt for merely having an opinion or point of view and because ive only been here a short while. Fact of the matter is i don't Merit fish. I don't particularly need it for anything, however its nice to know that someone has a positive opinion about my posts so obviously it is nice to get it when you do get it. Smiley

I do also think that there are a lot of asskissers on here. Who cosy up to senior members just to get into their good books. It actually pi$$es me off seeing that, dont get me wrong i think there are some BRILLIANT senior members on here who i think pretty much hit the nail on the head with the majority of what they say but i'm not shouting from the rooftops about them every day.

There is the flip side though. What i consider the 'old boys club' and when i see 5-10 merit getting dished out for NOTHING posts it does stick in my throat. I've made a similar post about it before which i felt needed to be said even though i could potentially damage my reputation in the eyes of some just for being honest. I don't particularly like that side of it as its simply not right and really pi$$ poor practice to newer members, some who are trying damn hard to rank up and making a good effort. Again i'm talking about a small minority here, but it makes an absolute mockery of the Merit system and discourages newer members when you see it.

Personally, i think the merit system is definitely a good thing, the conditions on here would be archaic without it. However it needs consistency and it needs to be fair. I don't think the OP has went about it in the right fashion (i.e. the use of sarcasm) though i do feel a lot of what has been said is born of frustration.

Actually, most members around here would immediately see through anyone following your tips here and therefore render their options well away from gaining merits at all. You have your right to be despiteful according to your personal experience here, but that should not serve to mislead people here, specially in the Beginners and Help section where people are more prone to take messages such as yours literally and not ironically.

You definitely do not have to agree with anyone here, with disregard to their Bitcointalk rank, and can agree to disagree in the event. Disagreeing is fine and often can open up a richer dialog on a specific topic by having various points of view building up into the conversation. It’s true that sometimes things can scale-up and spin-off a bit out of control on the personal side of things, occasionally going a bit to far and leading to uncomfortable situations for those with a thin skin.

I myself confuse colors being colorblind. Maybe that has something to to with the merits I’ve been awarded, although red and blue are pretty distinct even to me.

Eventually, it all comes down to why you want to gain merit and what objectives you have (if any). You already have 25 in just over two months. I gained 2 merits during my first two month after joining this community, so you’re not bad off at all. You have the potential and writing skills, but I’d say that you’ve started to fight the system too early, before fully understanding it, and that has lead you to propose options which have been dissected in depth with unexpected outcome on your behalf.

If you really think about it, this is all a kind of game where there are a set of rules and from there on you have your freedom to move around and find your place. You can live your life perfectly well without merit and even without the forum itself, so play the game up to a degree where it doesn’t become a burden. If you don’t enjoy it, there’s not much point to spending hours here.
