The contrast between the way the media fawned over that gadget guy and the way they seem to be overlooking a man who *truly* changed the world is disheartening.

Indeed it is a sad state of affairs without him there would be no Apple, they were dead in the water until they went Unix/NeXTstep/OpenStep for OS X which got them to where they are today.

true, but apple is really one of the more insignificant things D. Ritchie's contributions made possible.

Steve Jobs met consumer desires greatly. He created enormous wealth not only for himself but society as a whole. The praise is deserved whether you prefer it or not.

...and the labor used to create his products has only been blessed by Apple. I don't want to imagine where these workers would be otherwise. Ask the workers directly and they are very happy with their place in life considering they don't have to live with an overpriced cost-of-living unlike ourselves.

The value Mr. Ritchie brought is truly immeasurable as much as the innovations brought to us by other founding fathers such as fire and electricity; the technologies that lie at the core of the higher-level tools we use.

However, to compare Ritchie to Jobs is a pointless comparison for they both worked in different fields, they brought different types of value. Mr. Jobs was a facilitator, he brought out the best in people and existing technologies to create amazing things. Ritchie was an alchemist who constructed new tools with his specialized skills. He offered an innovation by which people -- through their own virtue -- could create more amazing things.

In the end, both men have brought value to society and we should value them as they are, not in reverence nor disdain to their purported inferiors and superiors. We should admire based on virtue and not ranking.

I will choose to honor the men as the individuals they are, not through the perception of a zero-sum equation or some convoluted competition. I will leave such things for the envious and the fearful.

Yep, Ritchie was a great one.  I just realized I've misplaced my K&R C book...wanted to crack it open for a little nostalgia.

(I don't understand the hating on Steve Jobs though...Ritchie was little known outside of computer science circles...it's not surprising he wouldn't get as much attention)

its because he was much more important then jobs. and then just forgotten, people don't cry about that he is dead.

steve jobs dies and it's covered within hours and is repeated over and over and over and over, ....  Dennis Ritchie dies and almost a week later coverage start to appear.
