Conor McGregor to challenge Khabib Nurmagomedov for lightweight title at UFC 229

He’s back. And he’s coming for the title that he never lost.

The UFC officially announced Friday that Conor McGregor (21-3) will make his return to the Octagon after a nearly two-year hiatus when he challenges Khabib Nurmagomedov (26-0) for the lightweight championship in the main event of UFC 229 on Oct. 6 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

This marks McGregor’s first UFC fight since Nov. 12, 2016, when he defeated Eddie Alvarez to capture lightweight gold and become a dual-division champion at 145 and a 155 pounds. He has been stripped of both belts since as he took time off from MMA competition to raise his first first child and pursue a blockbuster boxing bout with Floyd Mayweather.

Initial reports say's Conor is the underdog.  . And yes, all fans are eagerly waiting for his ring return after his money fight with Floyd and what a way to announce that you are back by fighting Khabib. The fans really deserves this one and everyone is excited to see him in the Octagon again.

This is where McGregor is good and not in boxing. This might be the comeback victory of McGregor if khabib will not be cautious on how deadly his opponent is.

Can't wait to see him fight again and I didn't noticed that it was quite awhile with this fight.

Let's forget that past fight that he went through because that's obviously a money fight.

I am not a big UFC fan, but I am looking forward to this fight! Conor is always entertaining to watch.
Looking at the stats Khabib would be the favorite but I think/hope Mcgregor will win

^  Omg you're right!  The lines are 1.69 for Khabib and 2.27 for McGregor.  I guess now's the best time to jump in on McGregor.  I couldn't see it getting anymore better than this once the promotions start for the event.  But considering that McGregor hasn't done any UFC matches for the last two years, I kinda feel iffy making the bet.

The only part I really really really hate about UFC and basically any sport involving fighting is the waiting period. I mean we really have to wait until 6th of October until the fight but I understand in fighting sports both getting in shape and actually getting better from fight to fight is an important factor. That is why boxers who win in first round with a knockout gets a quicker rematch or next match and boxers who get like 10th round gets a later next match, same with UFC.

Also, I remember connor had to fight so many good fighters to actually be able to get the title at the first place, khabib only fight against people who were not fit to even get the title, this SHOULD be easy for connor but he hasn't been fighting for a while so it all depends on his training to be honest.

If he is the one considered the underdog them probably I would bet on him because I think he is really hungry for a match. Even though I’m just watching UFC for entertainment, not that much big of a fan but I would watch because he is coming back. I think that fans really deserve this.

Actually he didn't lose the belt, he was stripped of it, when he was unable to defend it for 2 years. And then Khabib got it when he fought and defeated Iaquinta in UFC 223. Yes, as a UFC fan, this is really excited as we have been aching to see the 2 inside the ring. And its been like years that the 2 has been trash talking in media and accusing each other of not wanting to fight. I guess the fun has just started.

Let's see, usually as the fight gets closer, betting lines changes as well. But yeah, you can jump it and see how it goes as the fight dates near. Perhaps Conor not active and this fight is his comeback makes bettors favor Khabib. But we all know that Khabib is a monster and every fight, his improving. Yup, once you created that thread, I might as well close this one and continue our discussions there. I was just pump up when I read the news earlier that's why I created this thread to let everyone know. Promotions has been started even before the scheduled actual fight. Countless videos in Youtube has been circulating for years now. But we love drama in sports specially involving Conor so I'm sure the media will also have a feast day following him around and giving us inside news.

Dustin Poirier is making a good storyboard for himself by not forcing his right to be the next challenger and letting the money fight between Conor and Khabib be organized. Also, by fighting Nate Diaz in UFC 230, he will have his chance on Conor or Khabib if he wins.

It's obvious they are  going to rate the holder of the title favorite against the challenger but they bettrer not forget Conor was stripped off the same title due to inactivity and didn't loose that belt. I look forward to a great game in October though.

It'll be a money match for sure this is a match that nearly all the fans all over the globe are waiting to watch for and had been hoping it be announced and here it is, it's a dream come true, I'm really hopping post the loss Conor really goes in for the kill this time, I'm yet surprised he lost but this time I'm expecting a victory nothing else let's hope he wins.

Wonder why they’re making McGregor the outside bet. I know he’s not fought in the Octagon for a while but he’s fought Diaz at a heavier weight & Mayweather in the boxing ring so he’s proven he can take hits from heavier men (Diaz) & different types of opponent (Floyd).

I actually think McGregor will KO Khabib, he’s a skinny little bitch.

I'm worried about Conor's cardio. It looked to me as if Conor was tired in round 1 against Floyd Mayweather. It takes a lot more energy to wrestle and grapple in MMA than it does to throw punches in a boxing ring. The big question for me will be whether or not Conor managed to solve his cardio issues. If Conor's cardio is bad he'll need to finish Khabib early, else he's guaranteed to lose a 5 round fight.

Khabib is doing well for someone who seemed on the verge of retiring not long ago. I would be interested to know what type of injuries Khabib had which made it seem as if he would be quitting soon & whether those injuries could factor into his fight with Conor. Odd thing there is people think Khabib was injured training at AKA - American Kickboxing Academy. But no Khabib's injuries came about as he was training out of his native dagestan.

There are many pictures on social media of Conor training with Dillon Danis. Danis showed he has a good heelhook / leg based submissions which are usually executed from the bottom. Its likely that Conor will be drilling those subs if he expects Khabib to out-wrestle him. That could be Conor's plan B if Khabib takes him down.

It seems like everyone got bored of MMA when Conor was gone. Now that he's returning people are talking again. That type of star power is something special Conor has not a lot of athletes do.

@Hydrogen. What injuries? I reckon Khabib is in the peak of his career and in his conditioning. He can beat anyone in his weight division and that includes Conor.

But I predict Dana has a storyboard for UFC 229. To increase drama, Khabib will be injured in training and his replacement shall be Nate Diaz.
