I have a bitcoin address in my "receiving -> used" list. I need to sign a message with this to prove to an external party it is mine.

So I select sign from the drop-down menu for the address, type in a message, hit the "Sign" button and get a signature.

Great so far, except then I go to verify, paste the address and signatures in, hit "Verify" in and it just says

Error: wrong signature

I am using Electrum 1.9.7 on OSX

What am I doing wrong here? Surely the verify function should work on a signature I've just created from a key?

Please help.
Even in the event that an attacker gains more than 50% of the network's computational power, only transactions sent by the attacker could be reversed or double-spent. The network would not be destroyed.

I think I see now. I can't prove anything about a receiving address, only a sending address ....... doh!

Is that possible with signmessage() in electrum?

Make sure you provide the address, signature, and the message (you only mentioned the first two)
