I had this Volstro 230 for home use, though it proves to be quite suitable, only problem is I don't really like the graphic card.  But I want a ATI card which can do a bit of mining when it is free.  What card can fit into such a casing?  I tried 5770 6770 etc but they seemed too big.  Any advice?

Too big. He needs a "Low profile" card. The best you can get with that is a 5570 or 6570.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127612 6570 with single slot active cooling
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121441 6570 with dual slot active cooling
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161357 5570 with single slot passive cooling

6570 will have the upper hand since it has 480 shaders vs the 5570's 400 shaders. They have the same core clock though.

Unless he bought a vostro 230 slim it's a mid tower and will take a standard single slot card without issue, if it's a slim he needs a low profile and might as well give up you'll pay more than they'll ever be worth for mining

Mine is unfortunately a "Slim", can I check does the low profile card requires any external power?

A low profile card will not require any external power, however even with the 6570 you're looking at 60-80mh at best roughly .055btc/day
