Is anyone else worried about the Dark Web and what information about you might be on there? For those of you that don't know what the Dark Web is here is a pretty good explanation: https://medium.com/@AxelUnlimited/what-is-the-dark-web-and-should-you-be-worried-about-it-d7fc28197aa1

At one point Bitcoin was one of the main currencies of the Dark Web and there was so much illegal stuff being traded on it. One of the most important questions is how can we protect ourselves from the Dark Web and how can we make sure Bitcoin is no longer connected to it?

I'm not cool enough to have a fancy signature so you're stuck reading this

Thanks for the article. I had heard this term before, but didn't know exactly what it referred to. I'd say that it's a cause for concern. It's sounds like people's personal and banking data is a hot commodity on there. Where there's a demand, people will try to fill it. I'm sure this fuels an increased amount of cyber attacks. I do remember hearing about The Silk Road. It was doing $30 to 45 million a year! They were selling drugs, data, child pornography... Messed up stuff.

Why did you say that Bitcoin was a main currency of the Dark Web in the past tense? Is it really not anymore? Why not?

Yeah I've read that during the Silk Road peak 90% of transactions were done with Bitcoin but it's not as heavily used on the Dark Web anymore. There's also this article that talks about that a bit: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-08-07/bitcoin-speculators-not-drug-dealers-dominate-crypto-use-now?utm_source=The+Daily+Bit&utm_campaign=510c697e7e-Daily+Bit+%23153+%2808%2F08%2F18%29&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_74539b8bec-510c697e7e-38042251

lol probably one of the scariest places i never tried to visit haha. I had several claims regarding how dangerous darkweb is...A friend tried to convince me that there are several golden nuggets in the darkworld . However, each time i read how guns, fake passports and heroine and other bad stuffs are being traded there , i never try it. I also have claims that  your ether wallet can be hacked easily if you visit the dark world . In short words, i have been made to believe that , the darkweb is evil . Anyone to convince me or proof me wrong? <sorry darkweb"

Bitcoin was most popular coin in dark web. But now his popularity fell due to the appearance of more anonymous coins (dash, zcash, monero, etc)

Yeah plus Bitcoin became more mainstream so now it's being used for legal activities much more than illegal ones.

I have never visited the Dark Web as you can be tracked down easily and get associated with legal activities with no reason.

Yeah it's better to avoid it entirely if you don't want to get in trouble. I was just fascinated by what goes on there and how huge it is. That iceberg illustration in the article really opened my eyes.

"we protect ourselves from the Dark Web" LOL

For what reason would we need to protect ourselves from it? I'll tell you a secret, you're already in it !! Dark Net is the internet. This name was created to facilitate the understanding about a part of the internet that is harder to access by lay users like you. The idea of this part is that privacy and freedom are greater than the rest. With freedom and anonymity, many people can do some things that are considered illegal, like negotiating drugs. But this occurs everywhere.

For those who are curious, it is possible to view a map with many sites that reside on Tor's onion. https://www.hyperiongray.com/dark-web-map/

Well that would be a question of proportion wouldn't it? I still don't see any explanation as to why Bitcoin may be used less for illegal things now. I doubt it, really. If there were 100 bitcoins spent on illegal activities per day before and may 100 "nice transactions", that would obviously seem like a lot of illegal stuff. Over time, maybe there are 10,000 nice transactions, but still 100 "illegal" ones. That would mean the the amount of illegal transaction is actually exactly the same. It's just less as a percentage of total transactions. This could be the case, for example. (I just made the numbers up, of course). I would be happy to hear why, if this is not the case.

Dark Web, I heard it is extremely dangerous, and is often the place of the smart hackers and criminals active. I have never been to the Dark Web even once, it is too dangerous for those who are not good at information technology and bitcoin is really the most talked about here. Disruptive trading uses bitcoin. I do not understand why there is Dark Web in this world?

If you don't know what's ahead already you're probably in the wrong place. This place isn't safety for stalkers too. If you like taking risks, better take it on roads not on these sites.

Unfortunately for bitcoin, its past seem to keep on haunting it. A lot of people when you tell them about bitcoin, somewhere in the conversation its link to the dark web will come up. This is very bad, of course, to the cryptocurrency world in general.
If we want crypto to succeed somehow its "dirty past" should be buried with some huge good news where bitcoin played a huge role.
