I usually pay fees, but chose the wrong time to save a little bit. I have a transaction (offering no fees) for ~$20 of BTC that is sitting "dead" for over 48 hours.

That depends on the wallet you used to send it.  Did you use Bitcoin-Qt? MultiBit? Electrum? Armory? Blockchain.info?

In some cases it could remain unconfirmed until you remove the transaction from your wallet.  In other cases the wallet will stop broadcasting the transaction after a few days.

There is no way to remove/cancel.  All you can do is wait.  Blockchain.info has a policy of not broadcasting transactions that haven't confirmed yet after a few days.  Then the funds show up back in your wallet if nobody else is broadcasting it.

I'm not sure the exact amount of time before they do that, but I think it is more than 72 hours and probably less than 120 hours.

The fees may be little for now but when more coins are mined the fees will go up and I'm sure a lot of people would rather not pay the fee which could become a big problem for Bitcoin as it could take days/weeks to send a single transaction.

it's not a problem for bitcoin (or bitcoin-QT).
it's a problem for users that they don't understand the value of this network.

in bitcoin-QT, 20USD is 40mBTC ... for this, you must include 0,1mBTC of fee in Bitcoin-QT.
this software don't allow the 0 fee transaction.
