The network tries to produce one block per 10 minutes. It does this by automatically adjusting how difficult it is to produce blocks.

If the leaked document is true MtGox was bled dry a long while ago. They didn't double check their book and only noticed it now.
For all we know a decent chunk of the coins could have been sold off already, or transferred privately to a whale.
