They have added a cryptic announcement on their homepage:

"Dear MtGox Customers,

In light of recent news reports and the potential repercussions on MtGox's operations and the market, a decision was taken to close all transactions for the time being in order to protect the site and our users. We will be closely monitoring the situation and will react accordingly.

Best regards,
MtGox Team"

Any clue what that is supposed to mean?!! Are they talking about the phoney leaked document when they say 'recent news reports'? Or maybe they mean Mark's 'resignation' from the Bitcoin Foundation.

Mark's email to Reuters: http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/02/25/us-bitcoin-mtgox-ceo-idUSBREA1O12T20140225

It is a common myth that Bitcoin is ruled by a majority of miners. This is not true. Bitcoin miners "vote" on the ordering of transactions, but that's all they do. They can't vote to change the network rules.

Well anyway, it seems that both those events happened on the same day, so maybe they thought that the combination of the Foundation resignation and the phoney document might cause such a massive Gox BTC sell-off that they had to switch their system off until they had a chance to respond properly.
Anyone else got any serious thoughts on this? I don't see any other thread discussing this.
