Bitcoin Node Question

I'm a little confused about something and I was hoping to get some help here on this.

How do you become a Bitcoin node?  https://blockchain.info/connected-nodes

What is a node?  Would this just simply be me running Multibit or Bitcoin Qt on my laptop or what would it be?

If you are a node, would other transactions be seen by you, i.e. transactions seen by multiple peers?

In order to be a node, you must port forward port 8332 and wait for other peers to be seen by you. A peer simply relays a transaction to the rest of the nodes.

You could not use multibit to be a full node. To be a full node, you must download the whole blockchain, Bitcoin QT does this.
