The home internet (my parents, technically), is heavily firewalled and you can only connect to external servers on ports 80 and 443 (and one other random one that was used for my VPS VNC, but I forgot it).

Is there any way I can make the Bitcoin client connect, even with this restriction? I have access to a VPS, and could possibly purchase an extra IP to use for a port if anyone has any ideas...

I suspect there are TOR nodes that operate on port 80 and/or port 443.

If so, you could set up TOR, and then configure the Bitcoin client to run over TOR.

Isn't that the purpose of TOR (subverting firewalls and other internet restrictions)?

I thought of a better way (one likely to not get me into trouble with my step dad [as much...])...

I've setup a SOCKS proxy on my VPS. I just hope bitcoin-qt likes it...
