Nvidia says crypto-mining boom is over for now

If they are telling the truth, it means 1180 / 2080 are not going to hash very well.
Makes me glad I have held onto my 1080 Tis.

hashrate wise your gtx 1080ti will be a bit less than a 2070 rtx which is expected to do 56mh's overclocked, nvidia said that cause there are millions of 10xx series to be sold and they will have to sell at loss.

Oh, really? I thought Nvidia would prioritize mining because of how highly has demand grown since last year. This news is very sad and it will be saddest if amd will follow then. If everything happen this way, we can say that Bitmain wins and their every action is simply amazing. Imagine, when people had hope of upcoming GPUs, it failed. Bitmain already made asics for ethereum and other altcoins, they did it and made GPUs less profitable. Now this turn can be a game changer, winner will be Bitmain of course.

The only thing I can see the 2070, 2080 doing well at is ETH, due to the GDDR6 memory. But for every other Algo where core counts and clock speed matters more, it won't matter.
There are more profitable coins than ETH though.

I also read an article about that. Remember when they tease us with Alan turing happy birthday tweet? Knowing Alan Turing is a cryptanalyst, we'll be seeing two variant of NVIDIA next gen cards. We all knew there would be RTX but for sure it won't be used for gaming. Just look at it's initial price tag of Thousand bucks. Unlike when the first 1080 was released, the price seems a lot more higher than that.

So my speculation here is , they are going to create two variant of cards. Some says, Ampere is going to be the next gen cards for gaming and Turing cards are for mining-specific task only with it's BIOS unlocked.

yeah, its game over, can't win cause bitmain pay devs for their asic support, bytom, sia, equihash and many others dev coins already bribed by bitmain for absolute asic allowance support.

yeah. nothing besides ethash hehe and mining returns can be used to buy peanuts cause is the only thing that it can buy right now hehe

Nvidia really is just spinning this.
Deny that any sales will go to crypto so that wall street won't tie the ups and downs of bitcoin to stock price.
Then release a new GPU that is a hashing monster causing miners to buy them up.
Enjoy record profits, while still trying to convince wallstreet that sales were from gamers living in their mom's basement, and not miners who buy 8 GPUs to fill a Rig.
Remember just a couple months ago the CEO of Nvidia was trying to tell everyone that new GPUs were a very long ways off.
Now we have the announcement in a little over a week.

The entire transcript is here : https://seekingalpha.com/article/4172689-nvidia-nvda-q1-2019-results-earnings-call-transcript?part=single

There's a On-demand recording somewhere as well.

nvidia said mining boosted their margins and now its back to normal signaling the mining craze is over and they are not expecting that margin boost anymore.

if nvidia have kept quiet last year and found a way to not report the oversold gpus then last year and this year would be positive, now people saw that last year was a record win and might see this year a record loss hehe,

uh what? https://www.tradingview.com/chart/?symbol=NASDAQ:NVDA + BTC-USD overlay => no real correlation

Remember just a couple months ago the CEO of Nvidia was trying to tell everyone that new GPUs were a very long ways off.
Now we have the announcement in a little over a week.

He was/is trying to prevent a fire sale on existing stock (10XX series GPUs) and having channel partners eat losses and/or return stock and have nvidia eat losses.

As a public company, I think thats illegal per SEC rules on public disclosure.

They have to report P&L and inventory so sure they can play number acrobatics but they'll have a huge 'loss' somewhere.

I mean they ONLY made 3.21+ BILLION in revenue and 1+B in profit lol

edit: also there are other industries that have a larger demand for GPUs vs. mining - nvidia will be fine.

If anything, they should improve how fast they can ramp up and down production lines, rather than try to hold stock and play the market.

Also nvidia might even put rtx 2080ti to be sold cause 12nm is far away from 7nm hehe and amd might hit nvidia hard next year with navi hehe, if amd is tsmc first in then amd might hit intel and nvidia hard next year with 7nm cpu + gpu.

I dont think nvidia will manufacture a lot of these 12nm, if they do then they will lose big cause first miners will not buy these gpus cause market is down and not profitable and second, gamers will have cheap gtx 1xxx series, so if nvidia is sane then they will manufacture very few on 12nm.

What the fuck are you smoking?  It was nearly impossible to buy a GPU at this time last year.  Now you can find them for pennies on the dollar on ebay.  Explain to how "highly demand has grown" since last year.

That could be true for ETH, but for coins that are Core and Clock dependent the 2070 won't come anywhere near the 1080 Ti.
I am hoping that the Ethereum developers hard fork and kill the ASIC miners.  That will make ETH profitable again.

Honestly I think it would be great if BTC would hardfork and kill their ASICs too.

I'm watching now Jensen Huang's announcement of 2080. Plain stupid  that they set the prices higher than 1080ti twice! They think they could garner huge amount of money again with their new cards. Here's the pricing

The ignorance in this comment is astounding. First off, the only ASIC on the market for ETH is a piece of junk, it is not contributing to the lack of profits in any meaningful way.

The second comment cant just be ignorance, it has to be pure stupidity. Forking BTC away from ASICs?

You guys listen to all the anti asic propaganda and then say some of the dumbest shit imaginable. Its nearly unbelievable how much bad info people will parrot without ever doing research on their own.

Nvidia knows that their new GPUs are not so good in mining if compare with GTX1000 series. Also they see overall stagnation in the market. That’s why they don’t expect any contributions.

Fisrt of all i doubt that the money brought by miners was so low, from December till March i could not find one board on the stores...and obv tthat was not because of gamers. i guess they are not so good at predicting markets if they end up wanting to sell at a loss.

After seeing the prices Nvidia can expect no contributions from gamer sales for the year as well.

On the positive side once we get our hands on a 2080 Ti to benchmark, 1080 Ti prices on ebay will go back up.
