Created a paper wallet at bitaddress encrypted with bip38. Put some of my bitcoins in it but now when I tried to move them out it all I get is incorrect password and it's getting pretty frustrating. I wrote down the password when I created the wallet but apparently that's not it. Anyone got suggestions?

Try different variations of the password? Eg capitals or not

Just a wild guess:

During testing, we uncovered an issue with Safari version 6.05 in which BIP38 encrypted wallets end up with a different (essentially wrong and invalid) "6P..." private key. The only way to decode one of these wallets is to use Safari 6.05 for decryption as well. If you upgrade your browser after printing a BIP38 wallet using Safari 6.05, you won't be able to decrypt it unless you find some way to downgrade back to 6.05.

Maybe you can try out different variations of your password with a tool, but I have seen this only for the bitcoin-qt wallet password, not for bip38.  Huh

Try entering the password with caps-lock on.

Maybe you wrote the password down wrong? Have you checked the balance on the blockchain to see if the money is still there also?

Try writing the password down in a plain text editor like notepad, copy and paste it in the required field.

The guys at Wallet recovery services have had some success in the past: http://www.walletrecoveryservices.com.
If you can't find your password they could be able to bruteforce your wallet, knowing the supposed password and trying lots of different variations.

On the downside... you'll have to trust them not to take your full balance if they succeed!

AFAIK they can only brute-force passwords of bitcoinqt and blockchain.info!  Sad

I double checked and I definitely created the wallet on Chrome. It's strange because I wrote the password down twice with details to remember. I've been trying a bunch of variation but I'm stumped

Are you using the same version of chrome?  And same OS?

Anyone have a link to a password mutator?  (for lack of better word, to capitalize random letters, switch them to numbers, etc)

I'v seen a website recently that claims to crack private keys only if you remember at least some part of the key, as you do the website might be just for you
I can't remember its name so try browsing around the forum a bit for it Wink

Bitaddress is under active development so maybe something changed in the current version that is affecting wallets created using an older version. First you should look at your browser history and note down the full URL and date on which you created the wallet. Then see if you can get the private key to decrypt using an older version from their github repo

The password is not hidden so that limits the likely sources of error. Here are some that I can think of:

One or more spaces added to the beginning or end of the password
Doubled a space somewhere.
Copied the capitalization or punctuation incorrectly.
Confused l, 1, I, !, and |
Confused : and ;
Confused . and ,
Confused O and Q.
etc.

Another thing to check if you used symbols is that you're using the same keyboard map, for instance the ~ key might give you a ^ or a | on some layouts. (Which is why it's a good idea to paste from notepad if the password box *******s it out, just to check you're getting what you think you're getting)
