I have been a lurker for a while but just registered so I am posting my question in the Newbie area.  I know bitcoins have been around for awhile and they obviously have a value.  I can sell them for something.

But what about all the others? (Name coin, Solid Coin, Lite Coin, etc)

Has there been any others that have gained any value?  I know people have ideas about the future but I am asking if currently there is any that hold value?

Cheers

They have some value relative to each other, and a couple exchanges are up that deal in them. Be warned though, some of them may be scams.

It comes down to people wanting to make "the next big thing" or to experiment with different block generation targets, etc.

Thanks for the response.  I see ones with little value but just wondered if anything was anywhere near bitcoin status.

I would say the ones closest are Namecoin (mostly due to merged mining, and the fact that it's trying to be something besides a currency) and Solidcoin (because of all the hub-bub about it, mostly negative). Bitcoin is your best bet though, it has the brand recognition, and the most backing by far.

Solid Coin has had some problems and there are lots of people saying it isn't safe (I'm one of them).  Solid Coin says it will be the new bitcoin when bitcoin dies.  There are some good forums discussing it.  One of the biggest complaints is that the source code is secret and no one really knows what it is doing.

Some people claim that Solid Coin 2 is behind all of the recent DDos attacks. (not likely)
There are pros and cons, I would search for "Solid coin" and "Solidcoin", there is a plethora of people discussing it.
