At one point, 80% cold / 20% exchange. In December, closer to 25% cold / 75% exchange.
Now 15% cold / 85% exchange. This is just a matter of profit, I intend to reallocate a majority to cold storage in the next month. I'd love to establish a higher low and get back all in BTC again...

Cold storage, private keys in encrypted file container in my dropbox and every device I own.
This is not technically cold, this is as hot as it gets, because anyone can get your (encrypted) PKs and work on them. Cold is something where PK have not ever been on anything connected to an internet. Unless you are Mark Karpeles and your definition of cold is a PK tattooed on your forehead. I store in paper, cas coins, and some offline wallets, maybe 10% across exchanges. I have lost a trading amount at the gox, which was not insignificant but not a killer. I still learned a good lesson with Gox, that you should never underestimate potential idiocy of other people, and never assume smartness where stupidity is the shorter path. |

Admittedly i have a huge chunk in blockchain.info and then i also have an Electrum wallet with another chunk and then an insignificant amount on a computer using the regular bitcoin qt app, and $200-300 on stamp.
Ive been considering moving my blockchain.info chunk to my electrum wallet. Watching gox vanish should be a smack to the back of my head to move my shit off blockchain.info, but im not worried! Ill move it sooner than later tho.
Allow me to ask: how is blockchain.info more convenient than electrum? I use the latter, and to me it seems it offers an absolute maximum in convenience, with very little compromise to security, while blockchain.info seems to offer no additional benefits, but lots of additions insecurity. But maybe I miss something about blockchain.info. EDIT: since it's a web wallet I guess you can use it for making purchases when you're on the go. sthg that is harder with electrum. Yeah ive been meaning to make a donation to the Electrum project.. |

Those of you who have altcoins, do you take the same precautions/with as many of your coins?
Tbh I haven't been assed to learn how to set up a cold wallet, but after 'Kerpeles' Wild Ride 2014' I've decided to stop being a lazy prick and just do it.
By some stroke of luck, a week or two before withdrawals were suspended I moved all my coins to another exchange after seeing so many people refer to Gox's incompetency. Wasn't many coins, but one of my luckiest btc moments ever (probably no. 1 or 2 to having a last minute change of heart about selling my ltcs and the very next day watching them double and then hit the $40 high.)
So yeah, I have about 6 kinds of coins. Would you be as careful with all of them?

90% Cold Storage. Private keys generated on machines that weren't connected to the internet and wiped out afterwards. Stored on electronic media in encrypted files, triple redundancy in different locations, split onto several pieces of paper carefully hidden in locations so obscure I'm not even sure where they are anymore, lol. I also have a private key engraved on a piece of metal and buried because I got bored and it sounded like fun.

Well, that is a wiki, so anybody can write silly things. If you ever decrypt your wallet while connected to the internet your PK could be compromised. If your encryption key is purely offline and never entered on a hot machine, then you will be safe, but I don't see how it is different or simpler than just keeping PK offline exactly where you are keeping your encryption key? |
