Interesting.  You know that it's more likely you'll die in one hundred thousand different plane crashes before you can brute force a password, right?   Wink

Interesting idea, I presume you have a method of decrypting them

Yes I have, and I noticed that there are about 4 million bitcoins lost, so it seemed like a good idea

How? Surely brute force would take an inordinate amount of computing power to crack

with aws, it depends on the lenght of the password, a 15 character password is nearly impossible to crack

so it is a brute force method?

I had this idea a while back to use web-spiders to do computing tasks... a visiting spider will load, parse and execute any javascript embedded into a page, and therefore can be used as a tiny free compute instance. If you made a website which dynamically creates millions of possible pages when the spiders visit they will move through your site from page to page and do a little bit of your computation on each hit.

One can collect these files and hope that in 10 years computing powers will be enough to brute force such complicated passwords Cheesy

I guess whether or not that will work is going to depend how long it takes to make a single guess. If you can make a billion guesses a second for instance, you could go through all the combinations of a small number of digits quite quickly and it would only slow down by the time you reach 7 or 8 characters, but if the time to make a single guess is longer so you can only make a few hundred thousand guesses a second then even a very short password is going to take a very long time to crack.

Out of curiosity, what do you pay for a wallet.dat with lost password?

The better question is how would he know there's any coins in the wallet?

Didn't received anything.

BTW, I can also share wallet.dat from bitcoin core containing 30 BTC with lost password. I'm trying to do various brutforce attempts for couple of weeks but without luck.

I'm just want to make a change.

My target - to create collection of password-protected wallet.dat files containing dozens of bitcoins.
