So if supposedly 700,000 BTC were "hacked and stolen" from Mt Gox's wallets - shouldn't someone be able to trace through the block chain where they are and such? I mean somebody's got the coins in their wallet right now and if they ever want to be able to do something with their 700,000 BTC, they'll have to eventually send them to wallet owners who we might know and who might cooperate with us in identifying the person. Or so what's the real possibility and probability of ever finding the thief (be it indeed a hacker - or should we find out that Gox was a scam). Can we at least find out (based on IP or so) in what country someone's really rich right now and has 3% of all BTC that will ever be in circulation? I'd appreciate any explanations that are technical enough to make sense, but not so technical that I need a degree to understand them

There's no way to tell from the blockchain which transactions are legitimate withdrawals and which ones aren't. Only Gox's internal accounting records can tell you that, but if their records were in order they wouldn't be in this mess in the first place.

I ve seen another threads with the same suggestions. Actually, the idea is great but technically it's too difficult to complete

Anyway perhaps there is possibility to trace them ... and I hope some one will - but till now there are no proofs that "traced" wallets are really full of "stolen" coins.

True words! I also think that's is actually possible but too difficult to do it. Still if you'll find the "thief" how would you get the money from him? I know some bitcoiners who has been robbed and they were able to watch their coins but couldn't do anything with them - couldn't block it or return or get the place there is the thief!

Someone who lost many bitcoins, possibly an unsavoury type of character will no doubt find the thief if it is possible and take all the bitcoins for himself.

There is no thief. Or, should I say, the thief is Mt Gox itself, imo.

I think the same way - looks like it's all Mark's faulse. The cause of the present situation is Mark and MtGox just trying to get away
