Hello, I'm not a programmer and still new to Bitcoin. I have bought a few bitcoins and still very slowly mining If I wanted to 'fork' my own version of Bitcoin (such as Litecoin,SolidCoin,....etc.) for a small group/region with similar mining capabilities(CPU/GPU). How do I do it ? What's the effort needed... Will handling over the Bitcoin code to a programmer is enough ?

They're going to run out of room in alt currencies soon.

All I can say is that this is Bitcoin. I don't believe it until I see six confirmations.

Sure. They'll probably change the default incoming port and configuration directory, your fork will be ready in no time. You can probably do it yourself. What's the purpose though, that's a whole different matter. The improvements that can be made through alt chains can also be added to Bitcoin directly or as an external tool. OTOH, forks are a good way to test out these features.

Litecoin, Solidcoin these are not alternatives to the real bitcoin and i'm sure that the other currencies will not become a popular currency. It is everytime the same a new technology was found and the new technology become more popular and another group of people think they can make it better.
In my optionion the bitcoin is good enough to be a worldwide alternative and i don't see a weakness of bitcoin in this current times.
Some people mean that the amount of 21 million is to low and the deflation could kill the bitcoin!? I mean that 21million is really enough for the whole world. Look into the history in the western time if a man has more than one dollar then he was not poor. We life now in a time of inflation but who said that we need or want these inflation?
Some people mean that the security of the wallet is not good enough and the wallet should be encrypting automatically. I mean that the "open" wallet isn't the problem that some owners lost their bitcoins because the reason sit before the computer ;-) What we need is a technical training for the guys and then the open wallet is more secure than every encrypting within the bitcoinsoftware because the most users would use only one way of encrypting and if the software would be hacked then all these wallets are unsecure. Otherwise the users would use a lot of ways to secure their wallet and a lot of wallets would be more secure.
I will keep on the classic bitcoin it is only the real one ;-)

Litecoin, Solidcoin etc, CPU coins does help to fill a void as Bitcoin becomes more and more dominated by GPU rigs. But recently there is enough of CPU coins also. I don't really think another coin is needed.

Ripplepay, etc. is much more functional for local communities and can be used with Bitcoin too. CPU coins does help to fill a void as Bitcoin becomes more and more dominated by GPU rigs
Not to steer off-topic but particularities of the proof-of-work function is not an essential part of the technology, the function itself is pretty arbitrary with regards to the currency aspect. You can add new proof-of-work functions to Bitcoin too (not that it makes sense). Will you have to dump TBX when someone discovers a better function than scrypt? How does it affect the trust? Edit: It's like making an incompatible currency every time you have a new printing technique. And in general, mining is not that relevant to the currency itself. Focus on the scaling problems Bitcoin has.

Hi all,
Thanks for all your replies.
The reason I asked was that if I had simpler (and possibly use CPU) difficulty level and a new language interface to make it understandable to Native Arabs for local use in Arab World.....

Why local use only? And why not just translating bitcoin instead?

It just depends on the GUI, I think. It's still beta and they are working on security/function first. The clients GUI works well, but still needs some improvements to be "compatible to the masses", imho. Translations are one of them ...

You can fork the client without doing an alternative chain if the changes aren't significant. Just add your improvements to the GUI or whatever. Some of them might be integrated in the official client if the developers like them.
Creating a bitcoin-like currency exclusively for one country is dangerous because it is much easier for other people to take it down with a 51% attack.

also i don't see how you could stop people from outside of that country using it anyway. it might naturally become global.
