Altcoins are the alternative to Bitcoin. They were made with the aim to surpass bitcoin. But, unfortunately no all coin could ever surpass Bitcoin. Bitcoin was the first discovered cryptocurrency and it still holds almost half of the total market capitalisation. There can never be an alternative that matches the level of Bitcoin.

I agree, there doesn't seem to be any competition to bitcoin as most altcoins keep dropping like crazy and bitcoin is still going strong, sometime dropping but strong over all.

There's a fierce competition among cryptocurrencies but the main headline will always sport altcoins pitted against bitcoin.

When sense of popularity dictates that people invest in bitcoin, why do we really have to consider altcoins?  How far have altcoins really outsmart bitcoin in brains and brawn in the recent years? Let's take a quick look (and for the reason of not wanting to promote a specific altcoin as the best, allow me to mention only their capabilities and not the altcoin itself).

There is this altcoin out there that took the carbon footprint of bitcoin out by periodically releasing coins instead of mining them (which was a happy news to the eco conservatives).

Then there is also an altcoin that could create a block way faster than bitcoin. When bitcoin confirmation takes an hour on an average, this altcoin can confirm your transaction in minutes.  And to outweigh that speed, another altcoin promised instant transactions with payment confirmation in less than a second.

We also have altcoins that guarantees complete privacy hiding all substantial private data safely (best for those who want to keep their anonymity in place), and an altcoin even promised ring signatures, a unique technique to keep transactions untraceable.

And just as with bitcoin, there exist altcoins that allows global payment with no need for any central authority.

Altcoins, in one way or another, did outsmart bitcoin. Offering new or better features that may or may not be an integral part of bitcoin in the future.

But perhaps, we will only see an altcoin surpassing bitcoin should we find all of the abovementioned features rolled into one single altcoin. And such thought is really exciting in every aspect.
Well we have to consider altcoins because they are excellent in performance. Paragoncoin for example is actually good. It is launching its new project, the paragon space which shall rise its price.

Altcoins are really good and it is better to go for them instead of some coin which we have not been sure one. My favourite ones are Cardano, Stellar and Ripple.

I will much favor to altcoins and I will invest my capital 80% in good altcoins that have very good team and bright future and other 20% capital in Bitcoin because bitcoin have a limit to go up like from here if bitcoin can maximum cross its recent high of 20000$ and in same time period altcoins also cross their ATH, you will be gain much profit from altcoins rather than bitcoin. Just an example from here bitcoin cross 20000$ mean you will make 3x profit from bitcoin and if you buy ether at 300$ level and if it cross its ATH of 1300$ mean above 4x profit from Ether so altcoins are much profitable.

Everything depends on the goals with which the person came to the crypto-currency market. If he has a goal to buy bitcoin in order to buy a tank or something like that, he does not need altcoyins at all. But if a person came to the crypto-currency market for investment, how can one ignore altcoins?!

I agree with ATC, what do you think about ETN? Already we have talked about capturing the domenet position in the market. It has a real application in the form of smart contracts. It is also worth noting that the direct dependence of the price of ETH on the price of bitcoin has ceased

Most of the altcoins are trading at very low prices compared to bitcoin, that means there is a huge potential for growth if you invest your money in it. For example, there are lot of altcoins which is trading near to 1$. If you invest in one of them, and in future if that technology succeed, there is a good chance that, the price could reach 100$ multiplying your investment 100 times. But imagine you invested in bitcoin now,

if everybody or even a celebrity started saying bad about bitcoin, they will run for their money crashing the price. Compared to that, altcoin users are more technically oriented ones. They know about blockchain, they know about the technology that particular coin is offering, and they are betting on that uderlying technology, not on some mass speculation.
