this alone makes this sound like such a shit coin. does anyone have anything promising to say about it even though the code is completely broken?

Please see the update announcement on page 1 - we are going to fork this coin at 18:00 GMT March 5 - please stop mining as to not waste your time/energy if you are not on the correct block chain.
 
Be sure your wallets are backed up, as one of the things that will need to happen is that you will need to have all files cleared except for your wallet and conf file.  The block chain is save and backed up in its present state.
 
Look for updated binaries tomorrow, at least 1 hour before the re-launch.
 
Going to make some drastic changes to the coin mostly with the coinbase maturity, block time, rewards, etc.  In the end it will make the coin a lot more stable.
 
I was told last year that possibly these times were not sustainable, and with the huge hashrate that this coin was hit with, those warnings came to fruition.

I'm using the ones in the OP. Try deleting your peers.dat and resync, that is what I did. Backup wallet first
