While investing in ico projects I try to read the projects white paper, get to know the team members .
See if there's a working product already.
Ask questions in the group to determine if it's worth investing on.
I aslo check the price of the ico and the available discount if any to arrive an informed decision.

Buying established coins is good but you won't see any of the huge gains you can get from investing in new coins. If you don't know what you are doing just buy bitcoin and leave speculating to the pros  Ethereum ICO investors are still really happy with their 300x return on investment.

especially nowadays, many ico scams, it is difficult to find ico who is truly responsible, because only a small portion for now is like that. if I may give a suggestion, it is better to invest in potential coins, especially when the price is relatively low, so we will get more coins, so we have the opportunity to profit more

my advice is to wait until the ico reaches the soft cap first and how fast they get it. if within 2-3 months you have achieved a soft cap, ico will definitely succeed in achieving a hard cap and the exchange rate will be high. that's when you start entering for investment and wait until the hard cap is really reached.

This can be one of the ways to have some points in investing, like you mentioned. Soft and Hard cap can be good for receiving some information about project but this is just one step. I personally look at everything from top to bottom. Have some bad experience with it but now I always check everything even team.
