I do not wish to start up a discussion on merits of the various forks, but I was wondering if there was a handy guide somewhere that lists all the different variations of bitcoin that are out there?

I know there was the original 2009 or so "Satoshi Nakamoto" version of Bitcoin that (t)he(y) developed and released.

Then there was Bitcoin Cash.

Now there is Bitcoin Core.

If I want to purchase "Bitcoin Cash" I am supposed to purchase the ticker "BCH", that much I have figured out. If someone wanted to invest in the original bitcoin vision of the "Satoshi Nakamoto" person(a), which symbol am I buying? What if I want to purchase the vision of the folks who want to modify the original bitcoin which I understand is called "Bitcoin Core". Which of these am I buying when I am buying "BTC", and what is the ticker for the other version?

Thanks in advance.

Here is one https://www.forks.net/list/Bitcoin//1/2017-01-01/2020-01-01 But I assume there are many more forks of it. It just wasn't so popular until previous year. For example if I am not wrong I think also Litecoin is a fork from BTC and many others. Just search google if you want to find better list of forks.
But don't bother to much with this forks, practically anyone can make it's own copy, meaning it's worthless unless some kind of consensus develops around a coin (miners, trades, users, holders, devs etc.)

There is only one Bitcoin and this is Bitcoin.
Bitcoin core is a software, not network.
Quote
Bitcoin Core is an implementation of bitcoin. Initially, the software was published by Satoshi Nakamoto under the name "Bitcoin", and later renamed to "Bitcoin Core" to distinguish it from the network.

bitcoin = BTC (original blockchain)
bitcoin cash = BCH (the forked one)
I don't know where your confusion comes from.

I don't know where your confusion comes from.

Most likely from the bloody bitcoin.com website.

To op: bitcoin.com is listing bitcoin(BTC) as Bitcoin Core to confuse people to buy Bitcoin Cash(BCH). Bitcoin Core is the name of the software[1] and the name of the developer team[2], NOT the coin.

That confusion is generated from some self-proclaimed the original Satoshi vision's Fork OR BCH BitcoinCash.
I believe Satoshi left the Bitcoin development to erase his influence over the future developments which is the core of decentralization.

About your question, forks are not the ones with the lowest market cap, users and actual transactions. so clearly Bitcoin is BTC.

You can keep track of most Bitcoin forks in https://forkdrop.io/.

I assume that you are visiting bitcoin.com and reading things there so you are now confused. But don't be fooled and deceived, they are the only one that started calling Bitcoin as "Bitcoin Core" and making Bitcoin cash as "Bitcoin".

BTC = Bitcoin
BCH = Bitcoin Cash

There's no such as Bitcoin core (coin) on exchanges but only bitcoin.com addresses that.

first lets define what bitcoin is.
bitcoin is a decentralized currency with a network of nodes enforcing certain consensus rules. anybody who follows these rules will be on the same chain and in the same network. anybody who breaks these rules will be orphaned and if they continue those rules they will become another chain which we call "alternative coin or altcoin".

in this decentralized network the whole network has to agree on these rules but they can change. it can be an upgrade or a fix. and it has happened many times in the past with bitcoin. the important thing is reaching consensus.

you can propose a change, for instance you can say there shouldn't be 21 million bitcoin max. there should be 42 million. if the whole network agrees with you, the new rule of having 42 million bitcoin cap will become bitcoin. the same is with any other consensus rule such as block size.
now if you can't get the whole network to agree with your new change you will be creating a different chain than bitcoin aka an altcoin.

now back to topic. there is only one bitcoin and there will always be one bitcoin. but so far many developers who wanted to make money created a lot of forks of bitcoin to literary double the amount of coins they have and increase the amount of money they have. these forks have been happening for a long time, the biggest one which had a lot of money for advertising so you have heard of it most is "bitcoin cash" but there are a lot more like bitcoin gold, bitcoin silver,... or coins prior to BCH like bitcore,... they are all altcoins and their purpose was purely monetary gains. and their existence doesn't increase how many bitcoins there are since there is only one bitcoin!

There's only one "Bitcoin" and the ticker is BTC. This is universal across all exchanges so if you're buying BTC on an exchange then you're indeed buying the original bitcoin created by Satoshi. Also, if you check coinmarketcap you will see that BTC is #1 by market cap and volume because it's the first cryptocurrency, tried and tested.

I know there was the original 2009 or so "Satoshi Nakamoto" version of Bitcoin that (t)he(y) developed and released.

Then there was Bitcoin Cash.

Now there is Bitcoin Core.

"bitcoin core" is the reference implementation of the bitcoin protocol. "bitcoin" is the native currency of that protocol. "bitcoin cash" and its associated currency is just a spinoff fork of the original protocol---there could be hundreds or thousands of such copycats. don't be fooled into thinking they are equivalent. only 21 million BTC will ever exist, and spinoffs/copycat currencies can't be passed off as BTC.

If I want to purchase "Bitcoin Cash" I am supposed to purchase the ticker "BCH", that much I have figured out. If someone wanted to invest in the original bitcoin vision of the "Satoshi Nakamoto" person(a), which symbol am I buying?

forget the "original vision" stuff. that's a matter of opinion. "BTC" is compatible with the bitcoin protocol from the early days. there have never been any incompatible/hard forks since the early days of satoshi.

What if I want to purchase the vision of the folks who want to modify the original bitcoin which I understand is called "Bitcoin Core". Which of these am I buying when I am buying "BTC", and what is the ticker for the other version?

Thanks in advance.

not sure if you're trolling or just been reading to much bcash propaganda. "bitcoin core" is compatible with the bitcoin protocol. "bitcoin cash" is not. which is closer to the "original bitcoin" as you call it?

I don't know why (probably because this is kind of universal "rule" for currencies) but Kraken uses XBT ticker.

Bitcoin is the chain which has the most accumulated Proof of Work (PoW). At this moment Bitcoin is the chain which most people/exchanges call BTC. Bitcoin Core is a software implementation that has support for BTC and thus Bitcoin.

Bitcoin Cash is just another altcoin. Personally, I do not believe in it. It has no bright future ahead.
The real king is  "Bitcoin" . ("Bitcoin core" is a original core wallet for Bitcoin)

I don't know why (probably because this is kind of universal "rule" for currencies) but Kraken uses XBT ticker.

BTC is the community chosen short form for bitcoin probably because it makes more sense to have it that way. and XBT is the universal standardized short form based on ISO 4217[1] which is set this way to be resolve a conflict since BT means something else.
besides it is not just bitcoin that has something like this. for instance Chinese currency has ISO symbol of CNY but but many use the short form CNH

OP should filter what he read to prevent unnecessary confusion thus reading paid articles is wicked.

First of, he should read bitcoin whitepaper since all the essential information is written there, if OP just read it then all will be clear. Likely by now, he already straighten his mind since there's new fork coin, bitcoin SV ( bch fork ) that will be out in the market, hopefully it won't confuse him.

In order for you to understand about bitcoin core, this will help you - https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitcoin_Core. If you want to buy just look for BTC ticker which is bitcoin and BCH is an altcoin the fork of bitcoin itself.
