A Chinese girl named He Youbing made a Challenge show that she survived in a strange city for 21 days only with 0.21BTC to pay for all she needed including hospitality. It was extremely difficult in the first three days that she had to stay in McDonald's and ate leftover burgers. Hypoglycemia even brought her to hospital. Fortunately, the audience of the show put forth ideas for helping her out like reselling products she needed in exchange for her Bitcoins. And she finally lived through the 21 days. Because hotels didn't accept bitcoin, she had to bring a portable tent. Anyway, she made it. It was the first time when humanity lived in the society with Bitcoin. How do you think of it? Isn't a remarkable event? https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/iZJzzekJp3L5XKKUl4Cs1_56Vxenc9-NykPWTfsEwMf7OO36Eu5drTHwvkw3GsrpjF1KzBGOvvA3pW6pCxNPNa-dAQleO60ysRn9H7iFcc8A0Ir0MQe-vspjV3mDfzOx4nV1YlX2

Even if you use Bitcoin through Tor, the way transactions are handled by the network makes anonymity difficult to achieve. Do not expect your transactions to be anonymous unless you really know what you're doing.

Where is the link to the article talking about it? Your text has very little information and it is not possible to confirm if this, in fact, occurred.

There have been other people who have tried something similar for a short period of time. It even has the case of a forum member who traveled for a long period exchanging BTC for p2p. I believe that as entertainment is something relatively interesting. But it's still far from viable. BTC is only accepted as an experiment in very specific stores.

After a few minutes of googling I found two articles about the said challenge. Using image search on the image link shared by the OP would lead you to a youtube video of her doing the challenge.

I was going to suggest this too (bitcoin debit cards) but you beat me to it.

I think living with some bitcoin is very convenient. There is a market to sell bitcoin. Because it's the same as in our country. Who don't accept bitcoin. But can be exchanged for virtual money. This means that women do not understand bitcoin

With that money, i can survive about 1 years or probably more in my country. Well, since it said she live in strange city and it probably cost more than in my country and since she only using bitcoin as payment.

If its purely Bitcoin to spend 24/7 then that's going to be hard since there's not much merchants that accept Bitcoins yet. I my self cannot challenge my self to live with just Bitcoins, I just can't specially in a country where Bitcoin is still an alien word to many. There's no store that sells meat or fish in exchange for Bitcoins. A few weeks ago I visited Thailand and the money I spent there came from the profits and earnings in Bitcoin. Unfortunately I have to convert it to fiat and lost around 0.012BTC for the fees.

This thread gave me an idea. Here we have a delivery service called Honestbee. You can buy grocery from you favorite store online and it will be delivered within the day. Maybe we can add Bitcoin as a pay option.

first of all 0.21BTC is not a small amount of money like 100 bucks! it is already worth about $1300 which is a decent amount to live on if you are not living a luxury life.

secondly we are not talking about a country with high costs of living. we are talking about China. they have weird things that you can't even imagine. such as "Capsules Hotels" which costs about $5/night so you can have a roof over your head for a little more than $100 of your total money.
don't google capsule hotels if you have claustrophobia though Cheesy

also stayed at mcdonalds and ate left over burgers
ended up in hospital with hypoglycemia
1. when in china you can hang around many restaurants and eat left overs from many different varieties. why only at burgers.. dang. even if you stayed at mcdonalds, they do serve more than just burgers.. so again why only eat burgers
2. if she had hypoglycemia after just 3 days. i guess she has an underlying medical problem and should have thought about and naturally known about trying a varied diet. so again why only burgers... EG stand near a vegetarian restaurant or dare i say it a chines restaurant

seems her choice of location to be in was the flaw. not the currency.
even with no currencies of any type. i would atleast explore the variety of locations and see whats available

your not going to find many bitcoin hotels, restaurants if you decide to go on strike and just sit in one restaurant for 3 days only eating leftovers of one food type

maybe the chinese lady should have tried 'beccy and austin' (life on bitcoin) as a tutor before doing the project, they done well and lasted longer

you do realize that this was just a story, right? and just like any story it needed twists and turns. if  the protagonist in the story has no challenges and just lives a regular life with no obstacles then the story would be boring! hence the "Hypoglycemia" twist in the story and the hospitalization afterwards.  helping her out like reselling products she needed in exchange for her Bitcoins

I would not call that living solely on bitcoins, nearly none of the merchants accept bitcoins there.
If she gets a crypto backed card with visa membership it would be a lot easier to live a normal life.

In normal circumstances she might not have survived. But her friends helped her out with the necessities. Still I agree with your post. It will be much easier if she gets a Visa or Mastercard debit card, which can be topped up with Bitcoins. I myself owns one.

but the main message of stories like these is to show usage of bitcoin not fiat. note that it is not saying she survived with a thousands bucks. it is saying she survived with some amount of bitcoin. using a Visa, debit, ... are using fiat not bitcoin even if you top them off with bitcoin you are still doing an exchange of bitcoin to fiat then you use the fiat which raises the question of why bother with bitcoin in first place and pay an additional fee instead of sticking to fiat!

I think it is a smart way to live your life with limited amount of money while if i say about my self then i have more expenses than this girl if she lives with this amount she will become a good saver and rapidly she can further invest money in bitcoin and she can make more money so we can say that bitcoin is helping people.

I tried to do a little bit of research, so please do correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the monthly minimum wage in China just above $350 USD? She basically had 4x that amount, with 2/3 the number of days and no family to feed. Why are people thinking she pulled off a miracle here? Lol.

But yeah, if we look at it from a perspective where she tried to use solely Bitcoin on a crypto-hostile country, I guess that would make sense. I don't think there's much of a point though, except for proving how difficult it would be to only use crypto in a country where no one accepts it. I mean, she could've used some obscure country's money and it would be just as difficult and just as pointless. Bitcoin is money -- you should be able to convert it like any other country's.

Well.. she should try to do that challenge in more crypto-friendly city like Amsterdam. Also a crypto debit card from Wirex or other popular providers would have made the challenge much more easier for her.

This proves very little, eating leftover burgers does not constitute using Bitcoin to survive at all. In any way, if you give that money to anyone living in a 3rd world country, they would be able to feed a family of 5 with that for a month. <Taking into consideration that most people are currently surviving on $10 a week in most of those countries>

The challenge will be to give them that money and then see if they can use it to survive. <Selling it for fiat, does not count>  Roll Eyes
Now, that would be a true challenge, because people will have loads of bitcoins, but they will not have a place to use it.  Roll Eyes

This is a remarkable story but it highlights how bitcoin is really not ready to be used as a common means of payment. It would be easy to survive on the dollar equivalent of that BTC. I hope that in the future someone else can attempt this and have much more success. I think it would've been easy in a lot of cases to just attempt to explain to people how she can pay in btc and they can then convert that to fiat.

She's beautiful! A girl from China is doing the right thing! In Japan, there are more shops and hotels that take bitcoin. Perhaps it is more correct to conduct such experiments there.

Lmao she might as well have done that, really. It's essentially going to have the same outcome, except gold is easier to steal especially when you're camping out because hotels don't take gold bars for payments lol.

Exactly! If this was to show Bitcoin's utility, it should be somewhere it can actually be used as money. All this really showed is that you can't force businesses to accept money they don't recognize. Not even businesses outside the USA will accept US Dollars (which is the world's most dominant reserve currency) for payment, except maybe ones in tourist hotspots.

the biggest problem with gold as a currency is splitting it into smaller increments. for example you can't carry around gold dust with a weighing tool to give 1 gram of it when you  want to purchase something small! otherwise if we get over this problem it would be similar to fiat.

You are the Frankenstein, you don't need shelter, food, or drink

Sometimes I wonder if you really exist as a physical object (well, subject) and are not a spawn (or just a pawn) of the grim genius of Thor and Odin. Regardless, it is hard to live solely on bitcoins. Using Bitcoin payment cards obviously doesn't cut it as that. Both the outcome and the difficulties involved with the challenge described confirm that things are far from being as rosy as many think they are or want them to be in real life. In fact, they are quite lousy with respect to real adoption of cryptocurrencies, to be honest. All in all, it tells us that cryptocurrencies are not currencies but simply investment assets, mostly speculative ones, as it has been for years and not likely to change in the future

It's really stupid what he does, does he not think that bitcoin is a digital asset if he wants to use bitcoin as a means of payment, then he must search first where the country accepts and uses bitcoin as a medium of exchange.
in some countries there are those who accept bitcoin for payment tools such as buying clothes and food but I have never heard bitcoin is used for hotel payments.
bitcoin is very easy to use if you can think intelligently not like a very stupid person like that.

It was extremely difficult in the first three days that she had to stay in McDonald's and ate leftover burgers. Hypoglycemia even brought her to hospital.

Because hotels didn't accept bitcoin, she had to bring a portable tent.

So the story doesnt make any sense because she didnt use her bitcoin for her living in that 21 days, the story must be she is able to use her bitcoin to live and not be a poor girl or beggars living in the street.

I tried to do a little bit of research, so please do correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the monthly minimum wage in China just above $350 USD? She basically had 4x that amount, with 2/3 the number of days and no family to feed. Why are people thinking she pulled off a miracle here? Lol.

Well, she did pull off a miracle!
Probably one of the few people on this earth that had more than 1000$ to spend in 20 days and choose to eat leftovers at McDonald's, common....

It would be very interesting,if somebody tries to live 1 month with 1000 USD worth of gold only.By "gold" I don't mean gold coins, but one big piece of gold.Would it be easier, compared with bitcoin or no? Grin
How to cut one big piece of gold, where to sell it(most of the gold buyers cheat).
That would be a helluva journey.

I dare you to try and live with 10 BTC not 0.2 in Antarctica! Or 10 kilos of gold! Or 1 million $.  Grin
And don't say it is a remote place...

Quote
To get to McDonald’s, she first walked 7.2 kilometers barely on foot and luckily found an unlocked sharing bike for another 10.8 kilometers.

She was 18 km away from a McDonalds  Grin  I don't know how many places are on this planet where you can't find a McDonalds in a 40km radius

Well.. she should try to do that challenge in more crypto-friendly city like Amsterdam. Also a crypto debit card from Wirex or other popular providers would have made the challenge much more easier for her.

That's not using crypto, that's selling your cryptos for fiat and using VISA

Now, a more interesting fact.
Wasn't China the big name in crypto, the ones with most bitcoins, most trading, most miners, most everything....
And yet, again it seems like everything in China is fake.

With that money, i can survive about 1 years or probably more in my country. Well, since it said she live in strange city and it probably cost more than in my country and since she only using bitcoin as payment.

Yes, everything depends on the country you live in. I guess Indian guys could live for this sum of money for even more than a year. In my country, it will be a very difficult task.

So fabulous. I think it's too extreem because it forces to live in other people's countries by using Bitcoin as a means of payment that is not necessarily accepted.
But from that experience we can take messages, people want to live with Bitcoin as a legitimate payment instrument and don't want to use paper money as a payment instrument. governments all over the country should know this news, so they can think that their people want Bitcoin.

I think they cheated a bit. If she ended up in hospital, because she basically starved, then I would not define that

as "survived".  Roll Eyes  Also, the normal Bitcoin adoption did not help her to survive, but rather the publicity of this effort and the

ripple affect it caused. She would not have survived, if it was not for the helping hand of the Bitcoin community. China still

needs a lot more merchants that would be willing to accept bitcoins for daily groceries for people to succeed in this kind of

experiment.  Roll Eyes

This is really awesome. We are really experiencing the potential of Bitcoin use. As of now it is very difficult to survive with Bitcoin for entire life style like from hospitality to food etc., But she did a great job and she is able to survive 21 days with 0.21 BTC.

The girl seems to be attractive on her own, even without any bitcoins (and makeup), but with a nice look and pretty face you can survive for much longer with no money in your pocket at all. I think that when she asked to pay for food and shelter with crypto, the managers were willing to treat her with lavish hospitality for free. She likely just needed a little bit of practice at first with her approaches and attitude to get everything she wanted

To conclude, this doesn't look like a test of Bitcoin potential

Well, she didn't solely survived on bitcoin since she had eaten some left over at McDonald. Living on bitcoin can be fantastic and risky too if one has limited bitcoin when the price is dumping like we do see at present market situation.

If you pay only Bitcoins, then - it will be difficult. For example, in our country there are absolutely no stations for taking crypto assets. But you can exchange Bitcoins for the time being and pay with cash ...
