Look at the left top of the post, you will see +Merit, click it and fill how many merits you would like to send. sMerits = 1/2 Merits you received.

Both the statements are correct, you can give merit to posts you like and Merit is needed to gain certain levels (from Member onwards)

Before you can give respect, you need to receive respect.  Smiley

You can only give something out when you have enough of it.

Then how can one get the merits? I'm very eager to grow my rank and I don't know how exactly to get ranked up through merit points!

Let' say merits is the equivalent of likes in facebook when you post something. If your posts make sense to other members then they can give you merits.

Merit is given by a member of the forum for a good article.
For example, you wrote a good article about schooling, its usefulness and nuances.
Someone liked your article, he sent you a merit.
This merit, which you received, you can give to someone or keep yourself, that would increase your rank in the forum

The update of merit system is for us users here in forum to be able to rank our level , if someone gives you merit in your post and when you earn enough merits for you to level up on your rank. Giving merits to someone is to have a merit also , and only those post that are usefull and helpful are given.
