Recently i got a mail from bitcointalk saying my password was changed.
I was surfing facebook and it came on the same time so I managed to change the password again as soon as possible before the hacker changes my email.
I want to know that how come someone knows my password?
Thankgod i recovered my account quickly.
Also is there any way to keep account much safe and away from such scammers?

Edit: I can see that the hacker who got into my account also made a post in the auction section about selling merit. (link:- https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5037339.msg46140617#msg46140617)
Thats against the rules of the forum and i hope the mods can delete this before the topic creates a mess in the community as I can't delete it.  Angry

Maybe your clipboard was phished to that site so someone changed your passwords but you are really lucky he didn't changed your email,if that happens you need to wait too long to get recover your account.

You should use separate browser for accessing bitcointalk.org and also you should have good antivirus on your system which can block most of the untrusted sites and will give you warning before you get accessing.

You are really lucky that you acted so quick to recover your account, since the recent merit hunt

hackers go about collecting people's email from the bounty spreadsheet and send them a fake bitcointalk message through their email

Once you open on it, it will ask you for password and once you enter that, they will steal your password.

their aim is to sell the merit on the account.

So members should be more careful and verify any bitcointalk message they receive through email.

I think for a better security, 2FA should be implemented on the bitcointalk account, this will save a lot members from hacker.

<snip>
Not actually.
But a good security question and staked Messege can really keep our account safe.

This was not an phising attack. I always keep myself much away and safe from phishing. Also i am aware about each phising attack so i would hardly be its hunt. The hacker stole my password from some other database i guess because i used same password for various sites and it made him easily guess my password. But before he could change my email, i managed to change it and it really saved my account.

<snip>
That was not a phising attack. We should always stay cautious before using the same passwords for any other sites.

Your account has been registered in 2011. There was a database leaked in 2015 so its possible that hackers get hold of your account (that is if you haven't changed your password since the breached). In any case, probably you got phished. Glad though that you quickly changed your password, you can also lock the thread: (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5037339.msg46140617#msg46140617), instead of waiting for the mods to delete it.

Looking at your account, the trust page would show if your password was changed recently, and it does not appear that it has.  I think you've been phished.  You may have been under the impression you were changing your password here on the forum, but you may have actually given your password to a hacker.  If I were you I would change it again, this time making sure you are doing so here on this forum.

Even i too think the same. Database was been leaked in 2015 and i never change my passwords as i have a single password everywhere. I always stay cautious in terms of phising so i was not attacked by any kind of phising.

Let's assume that my data was been leaked in 2015. It is good that before changing the email, i got a mail and changed my password and made it more secure.

<Snip>
Yes thats because i changed my password. And this time i have made my password more secure and unbreakable. Hope this keeps the hackers away from me.
