Hello guys,

I faced a problem with my ledger, it failed and doesn't work after I tried to update it to version 1.4.2 via Ledger Live.

Short summary what happened.

I never updated ledger before due to different reasons and had 1.3.1 and 1.1 MCU. Yesterday I decided to do it. I followed the instruction, installed ledger live and started the update process but during update several times different errors pop up, after each new error and search what to do with specific problem I managed to update MCU to version 1.5,  BUT after that ledger got notification that MCU is not genuine and doesn't have identifiers and also I had to launch it in not secure mode. Booting option doesn't work, as it resets ledger to "MCU is not  genuine" and I can't continue confirmation on Ledger live unless you agree (3 clicks) and in this mode ledger can't update and I have note "Ooops, try again, some connection failed". I read and tried everything what was written, changed computers, USB cabled, reinstalled all applications, restarted computers, and I did everything several times, nothing works.  Seed restore also doesn't work, as "MCU is not genuine" resets connection to unsafe and everything repeats.  Cry  It is like dead circle. I contacted ledger support, but nothing new from what I have already read or tried, they copy paste the same text I already tried. I sent them logs and screens and flow what and how happened but no reply.

As a bottom line I spent many hours on some bug which probably won't be fixed in the nearest future.

I have a few options what to do and want to ask for advice about that. I need solution only for ETH and ETH tokens, happy that I have never used it for other coins.

1) Mia offline Mnemonic Code Converter [/url]export all the keys and via MEW transfer tokens to other wallet  (like this one https://iancoleman.io/bip39/)
2) Restore ledger seed on Trezor wallet.  I found a few links that it is possible but not sure what problems I can face, if anyone knows what should be done or known in advance, I will appreciate if you share your experience.
3) Your option.

What would you recommend and why?

Just for reference, this is a matter of principle, I don't want to buy one more ledger just to restore the old one. The existing problem had happened due to some bug on their side which they can't solve and I have no wish to spend even $1 on them again.

Thank you all in advance.

As you have your seed, you can easily recover your coins using any wallet that is compatible with bip39 standard.

I think coinomi is enough. It's a mobile wallet. Just download it from Google play and insert your seed when creating a new wallet.

If it doesn't work (different number is words) go to iancoleman.io/bip39.

Insert your seed (offline computer, download the page from website to minimize risks) and scan the private keys qr codeof your address with your coinomi wallet

This is a very bad situation, and I fully understand that you are disappointed with Ledger Nano S. Most of users have problems with firmware update, but with 1.4.1 version because of some driver problems and MCU update. I also check for this error on internet and there is many cases like yours - some are just give up and other managed to find a solution.

You did not write on what OS you are trying to make this update, but maybe you have problems with drivers ( I have problem on Windows 7) so check this thread, maybe there is something which can help you to solve problem. Also I see you try to make update on Ledger Live, maybe problem is in this - we all update firmware with Chrome App - Ledger Manager which is still work these days - maybe it's worth trying.

I read that one user is fix error like yours by doing this :

Quote
I manage to go through this by doing the following steps:

Connect ledger nano s to computer.

    Verify MCU genuine appears.

Push 2 buttons on top at same time, read the instructions to safe mode.

Open ledger manager, it gonna show up with message that new firmware is available.

Install new firmware and its done, things back to normal and im in with new firmware.

Hope this helps.

MCU firmware is not genuine after the MCU update

It is good that you have only ETH on your device, so you can use few option to get back your coins, all info you need is in this link : Export your accounts

Dear Lucius, yesterday I read and tried all listed recommendations, I started from Windows7 after I read about drivers problems I did it on Windows10, tried from ledger manager and ledger live, all possible manipulations I could. I told myself, after many hours that I won't spend any more of my time on this.

After I read your post (even I knew I tried that already), decided to give it one more try, I did it on Windows 10 via Ledger manager, I just plugged in the ledger and it started to update himself?! Can you believe this??? Unbelievable,  the only guess I have that maybe...maybe they looked through the logs I sent and fixed some bugs, otherwise, I have no idea why now only after plugin, the correct version installed within a few minutes...

If not your post, I won't try again, so one more time THANK YOU for your time! You saved me a lot of nerves and my restored wallet made me happy  Cheesy

I'm glad you managed to solve the problem - You're welcome  Smiley

I read many similar stories like yours, some users just give up after some time and others fix their problems after xx attempts. I think all this Ledger firmware/MCU problems are combination of user OS, version of old firmware and maybe even Ledger Manager app or in this case Ledger Live.

Unfortunately Ledger failed to clarify why these problems are happening to some users and therefore lost a certain number of users. I doubt that solving your problem have anything with Ledger support - I know how helpful they are, as you say they only can c/p something and send generic message.

It's also quite possible that you were facing a "timing" issue... The newer Ledger firmware utilises a timer, of sorts, whereby if the device is not "initialised" within a set amount of time, the device is treated as "non genuine"... it was an attempt to prevent the types of exploits that Rashid Saleem used when hacking the Ledger firmware.

As I understand it, they've made the timing quite tight in an effort to prevent hackers from running "extra code" etc... so there is a possibility you were simply running into a "false positive".

In any case, good to hear you got it sorted Wink

I never updated ledger before due to different reasons

I can't imagine your reasons are somewhat halfway good enough to justify such a behavior.
Updating your hardware wallet is mandatory to stay fully secured against known attack vectors.

You are running the risk of losing your portfolio by not using the latest security updates.
Ledger won't be responsible in any way if you lose coins on an outdated device.

The existing problem had happened due to some bug on their side which they can't solve and I have no wish to spend even $1 on them again.

I heavily doubt this is a bug from their side.
You did skip multiple updates. You can't expect everything to work flawlessly if you don't invest some time to keep it running on the latest update.

Anyway.. good that you have worked it out now. You might consider keeping your nano s up-to-date. For security AND usability reasons.

Actually, too much panic is created around some potential security vulnerabilities on Ledger Nano S. For a user to become a victim of an attack/hack of hardware wallet by remote, a certain set of circumstances is required to happen. Incomparably greater chance that the user loses coins stored on hardware wallet is physical attack or so-called "fingers or a child" where users is forced to give his seed/pin. Much more danger than any attack are the users themselves, no backup or lost seed is a very common way of losing coins these days.

Ledger is not responsible in any way for user coins in device, do you think they will pay me if I get hack on updated device?
