I'm looking at the member count when one searches for members, and the current page number for the member list is 66,666.
The user with profile number 2,000,000 is allahabadialt - and he made one post and hasn't been back since April.

We seem to have an enormous number of applicants who never really contribute to the forum. I'm not sure how to do it, but would it be worth having a clean up of the member list?

I disabled Fit to Talk registrations because of applications by non-member spammers. Click here to send me a PM if you would like to join.

This forum accommodates users with multiple accounts, and users use different accounts for different purposes, that could be what's playing out here,no matter how long you stay away,as long as you don't break forum rules,we're fine with you In here.

This is not going to happen,i do not think it's anywhere in the rules where inactive members should be removed from the forum..

Judging by your input and suggestions,i think we should ban satoshi right away, its been 8 years or so since we last heard from him or her

This is stupid. From a technical point of view, it would be possible to query the database and delete old members. But why??? After all, the man maybe through a year to come back to this forum and to use it again. Ask questions and write your interesting observations. I don't see the right decision in your proposal. So I mind.

Well many good members start by being readers, and only become posters when they feel comfortble about their knowledge of the forum, and I think that is something that should be encouraged. There have been 386,998 new members between the time the 2 millionth registrant joined and the registration of jetaid - that's about 6 months. So the membership list has already been pruned by over 400,000 names so far.

The comment really is about blocking the dormant bots from being activated to spam the boards, and I'm not sure how easy it would be to detect them. If I remember correctly, email activation is not required on joining the forum, and it would seem that that could be a way to reduce the number of bot applications.

Is there any kind of tangible benefit in doing that?  It seems like one of those things where there might be quite a bit of work involved without much reward at the end of it.  As such, it might not be too high on the list of priorities.  If all these entries were bloating the size of the forum database to the point where it was becoming a problem, it's likely it would have been dealt with by now.  Would it maybe make the forum's search function less resource-intensive if there are less entries to query?  Things like that might be a worthwhile consideration.

Bitcointalk past accounts are not just craps they are a part of the revolution of the cryptocurrency. Many accounts have contributed in very successful projects like BTC, ETH, DASH, RIPPEL and much more. This could be a great digital storage of revolutionary information in the world for blockchain and crypto.

We just could not directly delete this history of the forum just to get rid of some inactive accounts. This suggestion of your does not apply here.

I'm not suggesting removing the history.I'm a great supporter of the preservation of history and culture. I'm really talking about the 100,000 or so immigrants who are arriving here every month.

We have very inflated count of user in this forum.
Most established user have 1 account and 1 Alt.
few user creating atleast 5-6 users before actually understanding the "evil IP" fees.
Banned users creating one more user, to ask about their ban in Meta.
Sorry, No count/idea, how many users do a average bounty hunter can have, but somebody suggested me 100.

You are absolutely right, people might come open an account and later move into other thing which could take their time and make them stay away for long, but who knows, someday they might still come back, so it's a standard practice, you don't clear accounts no matter how long they have been inactive

Maybe, we should build a wall? Cheesy

The thing is, even "negative" members to the community have likely contributed in one way or a another. Unless, they have specifically broken the forum rules I see no reason to deleting members. Maybe, deleting accounts which haven't made any posts every so often. But, honestly I don't think storage space is a massive issue, and theymos isn't likely concerned about it. I guess the only negative of accounts with 0 posts is they have taken up a username that someone might want to have. Maybe, they could request that username in Meta though, and if there's any good reason for it maybe it will be granted.

Yes, usernames can be a genuine problem, as there are many people joining the Bitcoin and crypto community every day. This is the biggest forum which means it also has demands in terms of usernames. Some of the ICOs should be really applying for specific usernames if they get a chance to apply in meta. There are many bots operating which is just equivalent to wasting usernames which could be very popular on the forum. Huh

Member list shouldn't clean or delete. If ban for breaking rules that's different case. But a unban member could back even after years. Someone not contributing on forum it's dose'nt mean he should ban or clean.

The 1 post would disqualify this account from being scrubbed in my mind.

Accounts that has 0 posts for let's say a month after creation could be deleted without any real issue imo. Although in that case I would still suggest sending out an email beforehand to confirm activity, because maybe they want an account just to look, for the sake of watchlists and such. We need to remember this is a forum that was created for the discussion and dissemination of information regarding BTC, so a user doesn't need to contribute per say, they can come here to read and not be heard.

Agreed sounds like a small step to help curb the problem.

That's such a small issue for individuals. Unfortunately when you get to something late you are left with what's available. That's why you see hotshit6969 as usernames in places - so really people will just have to start doing this if they are really attached to a name

I strongly disagree with cleaning up member list. They are some friends that asked me where they could learn about bitcoin and altcoins, just like a forum dedicated solely to it only, I recommended here for them, I have helped to pay some fees without refund. Some just don't still understand how this forum operate because they have been too use other fun social media platforms. While these folks are still trying to come to reality with this new system, cleaning their accounts would dash their hope. I love accommodating forums and this one is one of them for not all humans are professionals.

I don't think clearing inactive accounts is a good move there are lots of reasons some people might be inactive but that doesn't mean they won't come back and use their account when need be.
