China has 800 million Internet users and is overtaking the United States in areas such as drones, mobile payments, bike sharing and artificial intelligence. Given this sea change, President Trump’s paranoia about China is understandable. But Trump is responding to the China challenge in the worst way possible.
China is poised to win the AI race. The opinion author in this article argues that AI is "like electricity: a breakthrough that will revolutionize activities from translating documents to making loan decisions to predicting consumer behavior."

Do you think there is still a chance for US to catch up to China in terms of technologies such as AI? They are copy cats but they tend to copy and then improve things even more.

China's AI is a bunch of "if else" statements.  Roll Eyes

Most deep neural network research comes from America still. I'm sure that America will continue the pace of research regardless of China overtaking America on that front.

If you think about it, it only makes sense that China's pulling ahead in amount of research published just due to their huge population.

You have a point. They do have a huge population but wouldn't that mean a bigger source of talent who could develop their technology? Also, they seem to be more open into accepting tech like the way they are promoting a cashless society

Their totalitarian regime gets to shape and form their society as their ruling class sees fit.

America is way more libertarian when it comes to society. Overall, I think the libertarian society will win out, as our individual special snowflakes will come up with more novel ideas than the brute force hammered nails that China pushes.

US will win this once they realize how much they are getting far behind. Trump's trade war may slow it down but it won't stop the AI technology. People of Silicon Valley won't let it happen. lol

Competition is always great for development and innovation. If the US and China tech companies will continue this AI race, it will be us people from wherever country who are going to benefit from it with new inventions. Well, unless of course if a country / company decides not to release it to other countries. But even then other countries will still find a way to copy it. It's just how the world works.

Every country has right to safeguard the interests of it's citizens.  China is the country which is trying to capture entire world.  It wants to swallow the entire nations in business; industry even it wants to capture their land.  This is the country which captures the land of  the countries on it's boundary or is claiming it's right on neighbor countries lands.
USA can rightfully protest to safeguard it's interests.  And if Trump even over reacts I think is not bad.

We may be cursing US here in the debate; but I can bet that given a chance to reside more than 90% people will prefer to live in US and 99% will be rejecting China.
