Electrum is what you're looking for. It's only secure/safe as long as your computer is not infected.

If you are looking for the best security, I suggest investing in a Trezor/Ledger nano S, you'll sleep much better knowing that your funds are safe. (Usability is not compromised, they are very easy to use)

I would recommend him TREZOR since its developers are doing a great job. It doesn't support as many altcoins as Ledger but at least it provides easy to use and always working wallet interface. A few weeks ago, I wrote a list of hardware wallets which you might find useful. I would not recommend buying a hardware wallet if the investment is lower than a value of such wallet. As Omega wrote, Electrum is a good choice for beginners, especially because user doesn't even have to download any additional data. @MathGame you should check out my Electrum tutorial for beginners.

Some will tell you the best wallet is Coinbase, some will say it's Electrum and some will say it's Trezor. As we all have different needs it's all about what do you really needs. There are different types of wallets

- Web based wallet : Coinbase,com, Bloakchain.com etc
- Software wallet: Electrum, Armory,...

Most of the time beginners start with a web wallet, but if you want to be a real Bitcoiner you need to use a software and if you want to be a hardcore Bitcoiner you need to use a hardware wallet

these two are NOT the same category, just because they are a website.
they choose a completely different approach to creating a wallet. Coinbase and the likes of it create an "account" for you which they control your funds like a bank and you have zero control over anything. you just have a log in and password which allows you to enter their database!
blockchain.com and the likes of it are giving you more control. everything happens inside your browser. you create the keys, encrypt/decrypt them and only store the encrypted wallet on their servers which they don't have any access to the password you used to encrypt so they can not control anything.

If security is your top priority, then I would go with a hardware wallet.

My personal favorite is the Ledger Nano S but Trezor is a great option as well. I've used both.

If you're going to buy a hardware wallet, just make sure to buy it directly from the manufacturer.

There's more of a learning curve when it comes to setting up a hardware wallet, but if you can follow simple instructions, it's a breeze!

I think the best bitcoin wallet for beginners is the bitcoin blockchain wallet, it's best and most user friendly and most importantly it is now supporting and can accept ethereum.  Secondly, the other wallet I would recommend is the paxful wallet, this wallet has been  so so much useful for me. You can even send out all your bitcoin out ar once on credit without paying for the transaction fee as at that time but will be deducted afterwards when you have another bitcoin in the wallet wonderful!!! indeed.

From my experience, the best bitcoin wallet is the local bitcoin wallet(https://localbitcoins.com/) because it has a lot of functions than the bitcoin blockchain wallet. With local bitcoin, you can buy and sell bitcoin with your local money or fiat currency. I started with the bitcoin blockchain wallet, I later abandon it for the local bitcoin because of functionality.
It is very secure and very easy to use.

If you are a beginner or pro doesn't matter. The best wallets are hardware wallets. Then you can buy a hardware wallet like Ledger Nano S or Trezor because you have to keep safe your funds. Hey I would suggest electrum wallet it's one of the best bitcoins wallet according to me, you can either install it on your computer, or use it's application on your phone. Then there is paper wallet if you intend to just buy your coins and not trade them. Lastly there is Trezor wallet it's a paid wallet only consider this if you have a very big amount of bitcoins.

Some common mistakes to avoid:1) clean your pc or phone of virus 2) do not access your wallet on public wifi or unsecured connections 3) do not share your seed, pin and keys with anyone. 4) if someone asks you to deposit some satoshis for bitcoins remember it's fake.

That's an exchange. Not a wallet, and if you're using it as such, don't. No control over your private keys / no control over your bitcoins.

I wonder why no one has mentioned Bitcoin Core yet? Is it because you need to sync up 140gb of data, which makes it a bit user-unfriendly compared to Electrum?

So if you want a safe solution, but don't want to spend any money on a hardware wallet, this is the way to go.

Don't use exchanges as wallets. Exchanges get hacked, get busted, run away... many ways to lose your money while storing it on an exchange. Especially avoid exchanges with no track record such as the one mentioned above.

Do not use coinbase, localbitcoins or any other exchange platform as wallet. If they go bust, you lose your coins. If a hard fork occurs, you are at their mercy whether you see any of the hardforked coins. Use blockchain.com if you absolutely persist on the comfort of a web wallet. But do not mistake an exchange for a wallet.

Not 100% sure, but this is most likely on your side. Did you do something really bad like saving your mnemonic phrases on a .txt/word file on your computer?

If I remember correctly Jaxx's app has bad security in the first place. This was more than a year ago though.

If you won't be holding a considerable amount of BTC (based on your preference) and you will use it to send and receive payment then I think the most convenient and user-friendly wallets out there are 3rd party wallets (Coinbase) with apps for their mobile versions of the wallet. The security is not flawed by no means even though your BTC is also online in the app it is still protected by your passwords, 2fas, and even some have Fingerprint security access in their apps. Wallet apps also uses your phone's camera which is helpful if you are scanning a QR code in order to obtain their wallet addresses.

If you're a total beginner, then I recommend you to install Electrum on your desktop in order to start moving your satoshis. I cut my Bitcoin teeth on Blockchain.info and I have never lost any coins, using their wallet. It might not be the safest option,

but it is easy to use. You can also think about using a local exchange for small amounts, because it is easier to link to your
